Wade Said:

Gosport, Fareham, Portsmouth schools?

We Answered:

i live in fareham, so i'm not too sure about primary schools in Gosport, but the secondary school there is Bay house and brune park. Bay house is the better of the two.

Primary schools in fareham are harrison and uplands primary. I went to uplands which has always been a good school, i think academically harrison is not quite as good, but the children there seem a little more 'street wise'

Secondary schools in fareham are cams hill, which i went to and is one of the top schools in the area, but not so good if your not academic. Henry court, which i heard has improved since gettin a new headteacher. There's also neville lovett but to be honest i've never heard anything good about it.

Buses run frequently from gosport into fareham, every 15 minutes in peak times. I don't really know the schools in portsmouth, but they could get the ferry from gosport to portsmouth harbour and then catch a bus to school.

England, Portsmouth, Cosham, carmarthen avenue.... you know someone?

We Answered:

I visited Cosham (in Hampshire) a few times (years ago).

My ex wife was living with her parents at R.A.F. Thorney Island at the time, and we went to visit a friend of hers there, right by the railway line where a beautiful little stream ran under the railway and meandered through their garden.

I think that this house was been used as a setting in a (general release) film some years back.

Gosport, Fareham, Portsmouth and Southampton schools?

We Answered:

I'm in a similar situation to you in that I am relocating to Hampshire (although only from Gloucestershire, not Texas!). Hantsweb (see below) is a good place to start, it will list all of the schools in Hampshire. I don't know if you are familiar with the UK education system but you may find it a bit confusing:

Reception (4/5 years old), year 1 and year 2 is known as Key Stage 1 (or KS1).
Years 3 to 6 are known as Key Stage 2 (or KS2).
At the end of each Key Stage the children sit SATs tests and the results are published.

Schools will call themselves:
Infants - KS1 only
Junior - KS2 only
Primary - KS1 and KS2 (i.e. Reception through to Year 6)
Secondary - 11 years old through to 16 (KS3 and KS4??/GCSEs)

Hampshire differs from where I am now in the fact that there is no 'selective' education (i.e. no grammar schools) and there are no sixth form (17/18 year olds) departments in schools, pupils going on to take A levels will go to a dedicated sixth form college.

On the Hantsweb site you will see links to the school's OFSTED report, this is the report done by the government department on the school. It will grade schools from poor - satisfactory - good - outstanding. The schools will publish their SATs results - these results will reflect the two levels tested by the SATs - for KS2 for example, children will be expected to achieve level 4 while level 5 is the harder level. The SATs results also show the results for the core subjects as well (English, Maths, Science). Typically a good school will have results in the high 90s as a percentage of pupils reaching level 4 across the core subjects and a good percentage (<50%) achieving level 5.

The final, real pain in the backside, is that primary school applications in Hampshire are NOT centrally administered. This means that you will have to approach each primary (or infant school) individually. I would a) check that the schools are up to standard and b) check that they have availability for you son BEFORE you rent somewhere. I have rented a house which has several very good schools nearby but didn't check availability before renting and now can't get my children into a local school because they're all full...

The one piece of good news is that, from September, the Local Education Authority (LEA) is taking over the administration of primary school applications. God knows what they've been doing up to this point...

I don't know so much about the secondary schools but my understanding is that they are a lot easier to get into and most (if not all) will run a bus service to collect from the catchment area.

Good Luck and if you want any more advice (?) email me.

What is Portsmouth, NH like?

We Answered:

Portsmouth is a generally small city, but really known as the business district in this area of NH and contains a majoraty of the wealthy citizens around here, but with that also comes some broke *** bums and weirdos. Uhh don't know to much about the schools, but their are alot of private schools for every class of citizens. Do a google search for Private High Schools in Portsmouth NH area.

Good Luck, welcome to hell
