Praxis Middle School Math

Thomas Said:

If i want to be a math teacher, do I had to pass the PRAXIS test?

We Answered:

If you want to be state certified you will have to pass the test. Private schools vary on what they accept.

Go to the ets.org website and and download what they test on.

Cindy Said:

is it easier to pass the mathII praxis or the coloradoPLACE exam?

We Answered:

I would say the math praxis would be easier. I find the praxis exams to be pretty straight forward.

Kathryn Said:

Can you suggest some books/study material for this exam?

We Answered:

Are you currently enrolled in college?
My university provided online praxis prep tests and lessons through the education department.
There, we could take a practice test, it would score us and recommend what we should practice, then provide "homework" lessons.
Also, check your state's board of ed site online. Browse around and look for praxis help and suggestions. My state has it... hope yours does :)
Good luck!

Question about taking the Praxis I and II exams in Virginia?

We Answered:

It looks like you need to take Praxis I and the Praxis II in 2 speciality areas for Middle School. You might need to ask a supervisor in the Education department in your school to see if you needed to take Education classes before you take the Praxis II test.

Miriam Said:

Is substitute teaching a good move to try and teach math full time/

We Answered:

Many school districts look for job candidates with experience within the school system, so substitute teaching would be a great way to get your foot in the door towards a classroom of your own. Substitute experience looks great on an education resume. Not to mention it will help you decide if teaching is the right career choice for you.

Tim Said:

i am thinking about becoming math teacher-what are requirements in CT or the states in?

We Answered:

In my state, to teach middle school math, we need at least 15 college credits in the subject of math.

The GRE is like the SAT, only it's for graduate school. You need the GRE (or MAT, depending on your school) to graduate grad school. The Praxis is the state's teacher exam. You can take it now if you wish, but you won't be able to apply for a certificate to teach until you have completed an education program, which will take anywhere from 1 - 2.5 years.

You have about 3 options.
1. Complete a post-bachelor's education program with a specialization in math. (No GRE, yes Praxis)
2. Apply to grad school and get your MAT or MEd with a specialization in math. (Yes GRE, Yes Praxis)
3. Check to see if your state has alternate route program. They place you in areas where teachers are most needed and you teach without a certificate but while you are teaching, you take classes to get certified. Be aware though, that the alternate program is dying out. Nowadays, without a certificate to teach, you won't even be able to get an interview!

*Another option is to complete an education program and become an English teacher, since you already have the credits for English. However, there are so many more English teachers than Math teachers so you may have a harder time finding a job.

Check out CT's board of education website http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/site/default.a…
Also, check out teacherscount.org. Click on I'm wanna teach and then How to become a teacher on the right menu.

Hope this helped.
