Science Experiments For Middle School

Pearl Said:

Can you think of practice middle school science questions regarding these topics?

We Answered:

Place an ice cube in 250ml of water, in a 500ml capacity beaker.
Have the students note and measure the change in the "high-water mark " as the ice cube melts .
Other experiments could be conducted within this experiment, such as: temperature change tests and the like. Mention to the students that the ice cube would be like all the floating ice masses on the oceans. Even if they were all to melt, the water level of the ocean (and in the beaker) won't rise -- as expected! Have the kids give a round of applause to ARCHI -- medes.

Guessing linear distance is a practical drill for everyone. Have the students visually estimate lengths of various objects, then have them measure with a ruler. The guesser closest to the actual number wins a certificate to hang on her or his wall "S.I.Rep" or something fun.

Does this sound like a good middle school science fair project?

There is no website below. :-?

Can you give ideas for a middle school science project?

We Answered:

nope, or a model cell

Sharon Said:

I'm looking for ideas for a middle school experiment. In life science.?

We Answered:

How about genetics? It's a big issue, very relevant to todays world amd there's lots of information about it. I did a piece of coursework myself about human cloning - Turned out to be more interesting than i thought.

I am a middle school science teacher looking for a lesson on bias in science. Does anyone know a good example?

We Answered:

i love this one i learned in anthropology class
there was a theory that the larger the skull capacity the smarter the "race" so all these european scientists started measuring. unfortunately, the inca brains were the largest capacity.
so the european scientists decided not to include them (because clearly europeans had to turn out to be the smartest people - that was an underlying assumption). My goodnes we cannot conclude that incan folks are smarter than the british!!

another one i love i think is call simbian something. european scientists decided that they could determine how far a population had evolved AWAY from primates by measuring the amount of shortening in their forearms - cuz chimps and gorillas have long forearms for how they locomote. Unfortunately the africans had shorter forearms, so of course the theory was abandoned. Becuase europeans were assumed to be the ones further evolved. Hilariously later it turned out that the theory was right and the folks they were measuring in africa actually had evolved further (DNA-wise) from primates.

sorry i can't give you specific references but i always love these examples.

Hugh Said:

Are there any good ideas for science projects for middle schoolers to do?

We Answered:

Hey, I just did a Science Major and I have heaps of ideas since I did 2 weeks research for projects. Here are a list of the best projects:

1. Effect of electromagnetism (magnetism or electrical fields) on plants. i.e. use magnets with a test plant and none for control and see which one grows better.
2. What depth of seed planting is best for plant growth.
i.e. show which depth seeds should be planted to yield the highest plants.
3. Elasticity of objects at different temperatures.
i.e. Use a rubber band & test.
4. Best detergents.
i.e. Coke is a good detergent in cleaning clothes, try other detergents/chemicals.
5. Energy transformation
i.e. changing of energy types, i.e. kenetic and magnetic to movement (that is how a battery works.)

Those are the good experiments. Remember don't ever try and look for complicated experiment ideas, instead find ones that you can do realistically and a thorough report on even if it is simple and one that you can record much results on. For instance plant growth.

Discuss It!
