Need an alternate FUN name for "Science Fair" to draw participation. We Answered:
I would make the science fair county-fair themed. So have all of these science fair projects part of a "science carnival" in a sense. For example, someone could make one of those things that you hit with a mallet and then as a result a ball or something has to travel to the top and then if it does, a bell rings or whatever, sorry I forget the name, but if they make it, explain how gravity pulls the ball, and makes it come back down, and also include information about how forces are pushing the ball upward. There are numerous other possibilities for this theme. As for the name, as a student, when teachers change the name into something that sounds "cool" it just makes it worse. In a way, you get the sense that they are being kind of condesending towards you even though that obviously isn't their intention. Its hard coming up for an alternitive name that doesn't sound cheesy.
To make it go further, I think children would like to see a lot more about robotics and electronics. Because I am a HUGE science nerd (hence my name) I love the science fair and find it quite fasinating, but there are never any electronic/technological experiments or demonstrations there. I think seeing a robot or two or making an interactive sort of display would increase participation. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF POWERPOINT! For my science fair project last year, I was doing a project that included dissections. I was able to find multiple pictures of a 3-D model of a pig that would have different anatomical layers such as the skin, muscular, etc. So what I did was I layered these pictures, and with every click, a layer would fade away. Although the picture itself would fade away it appeared as if it was the same picture, but I was actually taking the top of it off. I also added a section where kids could press a button, and then jump from section to section. There was an option to read a full description about the system, and also watch a video I made about each system. Not only were the kids crowding around, but the judges loved it too! I ended up getting grand prize though I would like to think it was more than just some tricks I did in powerpoint. It is cheap, and effective. I got the pictures free, and I used Powerpoint 2007.
And perhaps get the upper grade classes to make sort of a techno-musical about a subject of science. I am working on one this year. I am going to be using a video editing program called "Pinnacle" to make a green-screen effect. I will put two people infront of the green screen, and have them act out a scene, or talk about something. Last time I checked, we were doing astronomy. So I can find some cheap, sometimes free stock footage of a planet, and have these people get in front of the green screen and talk about it. The main idea is to get a space-ship video in the back, and make it look like they are traveling through space. Then when they "land", stop the video (you can use a projector for the video) and then the same people could come out from behind the curtain, and "explore" the planet. When they go back behind the curtain, just play the next pre-recorded video. Its simple, and fun for everyone. I get a kick out of the video editing, model making, scripting, and live visual effects, and my classmates get a kick out of being on stage, singing, dancing, and memorizing lines about things they find boring.
And maybe get some scientists to bring some "cool lab equipment" such as microscopes, telescopes, among other devices for kids to look at, and learn how they work.
Good luck!
