Vocabulary Activities For Middle School

Christina Said:

How is my essay??? Give some suggestions to help me construct a better essay?

We Answered:

My most memorable event in school
I immigrated from Taiwan to the United States when I was 7th grade to receive a better education. I got all settled into Hawaii and then was enrolled into Sierramont middle school. Although, I thought that my English level was good and fluent enough at the time; I got placed in an ELD (English Language Development) class. I soon earned my teacher’s trust and validation in class. My most memorable event in school is the first day of my ELD class.

My guardian and I went to registration for middle school during the summer. The receptionist asked me all kinds of question to gage where my level of education was. The receptionist also told us that there was no guarantee that I would be admitted into the school, because more people were registering then the maximum.

My other option was to try to be enrolled into Morrill middle school,
but both of my guardians said the other school is a place where most of the Mexicans and drug dealers are. They were worried that students in the school would influence me.

As soon as I heard their comment about Morrill middle, I begin to worry about my future. The era of anxiety ended when my schedule at Sierramont got mailed home. I was so ecstatic that i got to attend Sierramont high!

The first day of school in a unfamiliar environment is always the scariest and one of the most exciting. Meeting new classmates, new teachers, and getting to know more about the school is all part of this new school year. As I got seated in the ELD classroom, Ms. Kuawada started to introduce new students to the class and started an activity in which students learn about each other.

During the activity, I discovered that some of the classmates are people who came from Taiwan and I became friends with them. Ms Kuawada also gave us a test to see what our English level was, as
soon as I finished the test, I found out that my English level is not as good as what I thought it was.

I am so glad that I joined the ELD class since it helped me a lot in English and I recommend this class to anyone who has problems with English. As a result of ELD I got transferred into a regular class when I was in 8th grade. I also learned more about the history and vocabulary of English. I have learned a valuable lesson, that whatever you think
about yourself isn't always correct. I have also learned that even
some basic knowledge will assist you to a higher level of education.

Edna Said:

Are middle school language classes a waste of time?

We Answered:

It seems to me that middle school language arts programs should be geared towards improving literacy and communication skills. If students are learning to spell words, that by itself is not an effective teaching strategy. Students must learn to apply knowledge to real world situations. I am being taught to apply Bloom's taxonomy to my lessons. Promote critical thinking skills: define, explain, analyze, synthesize. Lessons must be real and relevant, taking into consideration socioeconomic and cultural influences of the community. Global teaching. There are old school teachers out there that are resistant to change-they have to wake up or get out!

Piece of advice: Honours English 10= no contractions in essays. you have to write out the whole thing ie He is, does not

Kenneth Said:

Why do i have so much homework?!?

We Answered:

well.. i hope my little tips will help you..

-learn to write faster, yes it should be neat but not THAT neat.
-if you cannot finish your hw by 9 oclock and you still have jsut a little but more to do, stay up til 10 or somthing. or even wake up an hour earlier and then do it in the morning.
-if you have a homeroom or a study hall, make sure you use your time wisely.
-plan ahead. if you wk home from school or w/e in your head, you should plan out everything you are going to do before you acutally do it and then waste time and thing "which should i do first??"

Discuss It!
