Jenny Said:

Can you apply for grants and scholarships before being accepted to a school?

We Answered:

Each scholarship has different rules about it but some friends of mine in college told me that they have valuable information regarding scholarships from this place.
Good luck

Here's one site where you may find assistance:

Vincent Said:

Is it to early for my sister to apply for Grants and Scholarships?

We Answered:

Yes it is too early to apply for grants and scholarships. HOWEVER! This is her time to narrow down which schools she is interested in attending. She can start visiting the college representatives that visit her high school campus. When you apply for grants, you can not apply until January 1, 2009 of her Senior year. That application is the FAFSA, Free application for Federal Student Aid. It is a good idea to read through the FAFSA applicaton so you may be prepared to get the neccessary paper work from your parents or gaurdians. Have your sister really get to know her Career Center, Go Center, or Counselors for the scholarship applications. She may apply to as many as she wants as Long as she qualifies for them. Also, have her ask the overachiever Seniors what they are doing. Pay close attention to deadlines!!!!!!!! Scholarships are competitive!!College is expensive and everyone needs as much as they can get for their education..
fastweb.com is a good site for schoolarships. Make sure that your sister knows she must be admitted to the college campuses first before she submits scholarship applications.
The information is overwhelming so don't freak out. Stay focused doing a good job in school and remember the Colleges and Universities websites are wealth of information. Look under Financial Aid Good Luck

Does anyone know where they can apply for grants, scholarships and loans?

We Answered:

Hi,

Fastweb.com
CollegeAnswer.com
Also, check out your school's website financial page to see if they accept federal aid, if so, go and fill out the FAFSA and you could qualify for Federal grants and loans.
Salliemae also offers a loan for students who are doing trade schools and beauty schools. The only bad thing is the intrest rate may be high and also they may require you to have a co-signer.

WHEN and how should I apply for grants and scholarships?

To get the maximal amount of federal aid you qualify for file your FAFSA, free application for federal student aid (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/), Jan 1 of the year you will attend. Dont wait for you/your families W2s so you can do your taxes for that year, just mark estimate on the FAFSA and use the previous years taxes, then when you get your actual w2s for that year, do your taxes and go back on the FAFSA home page and make corrections with the actual info for that year, that is what we did. Why? Because colleges are only given so much money for grants, those who apply early will get the grants, as time goes by that money runs out and even if you qualify you wont get it because it ran out and was given to those who filed earlier.

When you do the FAFSA you are applying for all of these types of aid and even more as some states have their own and also college have their own: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/what010.htm

The fafsa will ask questions about your/your parents finances like income, amount in banks, stocks, mutual funds and things like that, property owned, etc. Also how many in your home, how many in home going to college, what colleges you want to attend, what housing you want, etc.

They take this info and determine your EFC, estimated family contribution, or the amount of money you and your family can afford to pay for your own college. They will put this EFC and a recap of your FAFSA in a report called SAR report.

Now you will not get a letter from the government saying you qualify for this amount of federal aid this year $XXX.XX. It does not work that way. The only way you find out is that the govt will send that SAR to all the colleges you listed on the FAFSA. The colleges will look at your EFC, subtract that amount from the cost of attendance (tuition, books, materials, personal costs, travel, meals, housing, fees) and this new amount will be how much financial aid you need. They will then offer you grants you qualify for, student loans (staffords), parent loans (parent plus), federal work study, any college based loans they may offer. Most students get a combination of this aid. Dont get scared if you need a student loan, most all students do and these federal loans are great: http://www.gocollege.com/financial-aid/s… The awards from the colleges will be different. Here is a samples of financial aid awards from college: http://www.collegeincolorado.org/Financi…

Here is information about scholarships. http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/

finaid.org is a great site all about the FAFSA and any questions about it you have about financial aid.
