Biomedical Engineering Scholarships

Marcus Said:

Can I get into medical school with a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering?

We Answered:

Yup....you just need to also take the premed prereq courses (some, if not most, of which will overlap with your degree--biology, gen chem, orgo, physics, math), take the MCAT, and get involved in medical volunteering/shadowing. Schools care that you have passion and excel within your field....the field of study is less important, since they are looking for broader, transferable skills. Just be careful to keep up your GPA....a tough major doesn't make up for a low GPA in the med school admissions process.

Actually, if you have a true interest in biomed engineering, you'll probably have an edge at certain med schools....biomed tech is a booming field within medicine (eg at my school, you can do a specific concentration of study in biotech).

Angel Said:

I want to be a vet and i have a scholarship for biomedical engineering. Will that help me or is it relevant?

We Answered:

I'm not exactly sure what biomedical engineering is, but I imagine you'll have to take biology and chemistry and it will probably give you a unique perspective as a vet and vet schools will probably see that as a good thing.

Dennis Said:

Biomedical engineering vs pharmacy?

We Answered:

Go with the scholarship to the BioMed School.

BioMed Engineering will get you all of the prerequisites for any Pharmacy school.
Most students who go to pharm school already have a bachelors in a science field- plus prereqs. Four year of BioMed Eng would more than prepare you for pharmacy school.

YOu have a unique opportunity to do both. Plus, if you change your mind, a 4 year degree in BioMed is still a good employment opportunity. The point of college is to get your degree so you are prepared for supporting yourself one day. If you can do in nearly for free or at a reduced price, go for that!

biomedical engineering?

We Answered:

Sigh. Ok. Biomedical Engineering is a new field so the vast majority of the job opportunities are in research. You can apply for jobs with companies but keep in mind a lot of them are new and may not be around in a few years. If you can get a job with an established company then you are lucky.

In order to get good funding to get an MS you should probably apply for a thesis masters. In most of these cases you apply to the program not knowing if you will get funding and they tell you after you have been accepted if there is $$ for you to get a research assistanceship or a teaching assistanceship. Then, you make your decision. This is why you have to apply to many universities. The criteria vary widely but in general you need to have good grades and an avid interest in research to get in the programs. Identify a detailed research area you are interested in and apply to programs which will allow you the chance to develop it--they will want you and you will want to be there.

I am in biomedical engineering at University of California-Davis and they appear to pay all their master's students for at least one or two years. It is a 3 year program here. I know of no where else where they support all master's students like this, but I am sure there are more places. Good luck.

Thomas Said:

how hard is biomedical engineering and pre-med?

We Answered:

Take the biomedical engineering degree option and fill in the few courses that might be needed for pre-med but are not part of the engineering program. Your GPA will depend on your skills. Frankly I found that courses that emphasized mathematics were easier for me than those which emphasized memorization. Your first year in medical school will be a load of memorization.
