Canadian Students Eligible for Scholarships in USA Universities?

We Answered:

I am a Canadian engineer living in LA and had exactly the same problem. She went to Somin Fraser in the Vancouver area for her freshman year but she transferred to Chatham University in Pittsburgh for the rest of her undergrad degree. Chatham costs about $30,000 a year. However, as a private school they could give her aid and awarded her $9500 a year. She was also able to get a $10,000 a year student loan from the BC government each year and I paid cash for the balance. And her grandmother chipped in another $5,000 a year for living expenses.

Many US schools qualify for Canadian student loans. And if the selected school does not, there is a process that takes about a month to get them on.

She will not qualify for in state tuition at a public school so I suggest not even trying at a public school. Their out of state rates are as high as a private school.

Do consider Chatham (www.chatham.edu).

My daughter is now in a mid tier grad school in a Technology Management program. I paid the $8,000 tuition for the first semester but she won a GA for the second semester and teaches two engineering classes and gets free tuition and $800 a month now from the school.

For this fall she has won a National Academy of Sciences fellowship and will be working in Washington DC for a government board processing applications for stimulus money. This fellowship generally comes with a good shot at a GA with a tuition waver at Johns Hopkins for her doctorate.

So hopefully she can get into a school like Chatham (They do not require the SAT) or you send her back to Canada to go to a Canadian school.

If you write to me directly through Yahoo Answers I will give you my email address.to give you more information. Your friends are exactly where I was in 2004.

full scholarship to NYU journalism for international (canadian) student?

We Answered:

NYU doesn't like to give out money. They're notorious for it. So a FULL scholarship is going to be very good. A true full scholarship is hard to get anywhere.

Now, if I were you, I would look at scholarships for international students, specifically. But as I said a full scholarship is hard to come by. There are some for minorities and I know there have to be some out there for international students. a Google search is sure to bring you something. I've found the fastweb is crap though and everyone uses it which makes those scholarships more competitive

NYU scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.

The Presidential Honors Scholarship is provided to approximately the top 5% of the admitted class each year. Of course, students selected for this prestigious scholarship follow the honors track in their chosen major, and are expected to participate in a wide range of demanding extra curricular activities and symposia.

The Martin Luther King Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate both exceptional academics AND exceptional financial need. This program also carries a heavy community service/involvement responsibility.

The AnBryce Scholarship is awarded to exceptional students who are first generation college students from their families.

The ARCH Scholarship is for students specially chosen for their dedication to making a positive impact on the world.

You can find information on those scholarships here: http://admissions.nyu.edu/financial.aid/… and here: http://admissions.nyu.edu/financial.aid/…

Outside scholarships that have been identified by the financial aid office at NYU as noteworthy to students include:

Coca-Cola, Gates Millennium, National Merit, New York Times College, Presidential Freedom, Smart Start, Dell Scholars, Drive Your Future, Hispanic, Horatio Alger, Jackie Robinson Foundation, P.E.N.C.I.L. Seinfeld, Ron Brown Scholar and Walmart.

You can find information about all of those scholarships here: http://admissions.nyu.edu/financial.aid/…

Honestly? Unless your academics are extremely extraordinary, there is little or no chance that you're going to qualify for a "full" scholarship to a top academic program like NYU.

Like most expensive private schools, NYU is quite generous with its financial aid dollars, but the high cost of attendance means that its students are saddled with high out-of-pocket costs, despite the generosity of aid. One reputable source, the College Money Handbook, estimates that the average NYU student pays about $25,000 a year AFTER all aid has been accounted for.

Last year, NYU received 37,245 applications for admission, and offered acceptance to 11,965, an acceptance percentage of about 32%. Of those were offered admission, only 37% actually enrolled.

85% of the admitted students had SAT scores of 600 or better in all three test areas (reading, writing, math). 32% had 700+ in writing, and 37% had 700+ in reading and math.

68% of the admitted students finished in the top 10% of their high school graduating class, and nearly everyone who was accepted was in the top 25% of their high school class. More than 72% had an unweighted high school GPA of 3.5 and above, and the average GPA was 3.6.

NYU awarded more than $142 million in institutional aid for the year - and they estimate that they meet an average of 72.3% of financial aid need. This includes loans - not just "free" money like grants and scholarships - in fact, most of that money will be loans.

Only 232 students were awarded scholarships that were not based on financial need as well as academics. The average student has $34,500 dollars in student loans at any given time.

I hope all of that information helps. Good luck.
