College Scholarship Applications

Roberto Said:

Do companies actually hide college scholarship applications to avoid awarding them?

We Answered:

No, they get big tax breaks for awarding them, and none for hiding them. They make it hard, because if a person can't figure out the application process, they are probably not eligible for the scholarship.

Carlos Said:

Is it okay to reference high school activities on a college scholarship application?

We Answered:

Depends on 1) how long ago high school is for you and 2) how relevant those activities are to the scholarship. Once you've been out of high school for a couple of years, the significance of what you did there is greatly diminished. Assuming you have NOT been out of high school for more than about a year and without knowing any other details, I would say include orchestra for sure; if the "ski team" was competing against other schools like the volleyball or baseball teams did, you could include it as well as long as it has some relevance.

Jenny Said:

Does having NHS, National Honor Society, make much difference on college applications & scholarship offers?

We Answered:

I was in the NHS in high school. As nice as it was to have the title, it really didn't help when it came to college scholarships/ applications. All they wanted to know was how well I did on my ACT test.

The number one thing that all colleges look for is the ACT/SAT test score...If you make a really high score then you will have a chance at a good scholarship. If you don't do so well, then you will have a harder time getting an academic scholarship.

Terrance Said:

Which should i do first - college applications or scholarship applications?

We Answered:

Apply now for scholarships. The earlier you apply, the better are the chances of getting one. Then apply for college the day you finish the scholarship applications.

It is best to apply before the senior year in high school. Your school counselor should be giving you this info. If that hasn't happened, ask for an appt.
