Graduate School Scholarships

Roland Said:

Where to look for scholarships for graduate school?

We Answered:

The best place to start looking for tuition money for graduate school and especially for the PhD is those schools offering a graduate or research assistants positions. Many offer tuition help and monthly subsidies. Also, it will help you gain the teaching experience if you are interested in teaching at the college or university level. I will include some other free resources to help you locate tuition money. Good luck!

Are there any good Graduate School Scholarships available?

We Answered:

"24" (I love your tv show, by the way):

Scholarships are available for graduate students, but graduate scholarships tend to be more narrowly tailored to applicants who are pursuing a particular course of study.

In other words, there tend to be graduate scholarships for business, graduate scholarships for engineering, graduate scholarships for law, and graduate scholarships for architecture, rather than "general graduate scholarships".

Many of these scholarship opportunities are sponsored by membership organizations or large companies within a particular profession.

Also keep in mind that there are far fewer graduate students than there are undergrads, so by extension, there are far fewer scholarship opportunities - which makes these scholarships more difficult to find.

You could consider one of the paid-scholarship search services - sometimes when you're looking for a needle-in-the-haystack scholarship, the money that you spend can be worthwhile.

Another option is to look to the membership organizations in your career field. Aspiring psychologists should contact the American Psychological Association, aspiring architects should contact the American Institute of Architects, aspiring lawyers should contact the American Bar Association, etc. Any of those organizations can help point you in the right direction.

Finally, I can tell you that the greatest amount of graduate financial aid is institutional assistance, offered by the schools themselves. My graduate school education was paid for by the stipends that I earned as a teaching assistant, and later as a lecturer. Other students received funds for working as research assistants with grant-supported faculty members. Check with your department to find out about any stipends that might be available to you, and how to qualify for those. They'll also know about any professional associations that might offer scholarship funds.

I hope that helps you - good luck!
