Hispanic Scholarships For Women
Marcus Said:
Do you believe that White males are experiencing the most discrimination? We Answered:
In South Africa, yes, they are...in the US...well!!! The sad thing is, as a brown person, there are some cities I will never go to in the US. And that's a fact...I got stared at a lot in small towns...the thing is, why not offer scholarships that are directed to different ethnicities? Hopefully in the next 100 years, the US will be a place where race - which doesnt exist by the way- ceases to be an issue..some would argue that all the other scholarships that aren't for Native Americans, Hispanics or Blacks are for Whites, but I'm neither here nor there...Ramon Said:
is this wrong ???? only 5% will agree with me?We Answered:
As a Professional White guy, and a logical human being, I have to say the author is fighting fire with fire. Let's fight fire with WATER and agree that "racial pride" is quite possibly the stupidest ideology in human history. This is the racial equivalent of jingoism, and it's only fueling the fires of racism. No matter what color or nationality a person claims, THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. Racial pride displays the fact that the individual hasn't done anything in his/her life worthwhile enough to be proud of; an ignorant crutch used by people too lazy to think individually.Emily Said:
Looking for other peoples thoughts? We Answered:
I used to not see the big deal about it back when I was of a more liberal persuasion, but I do see your point, with asking this.I suppose the originators of these scholarships were thinking of class struggle issues (especially among minorities), or the idea of women potentially opting to not go back to school because they had started families already, as being deterrents, so they were trying to give them more of a leg up to encourage them to go back to school.
Our society has changed since then though- it's not just males who go to college now, and it's not just Caucasians who do either- if you have the ambition and can pay at least part of the tuition costs, you can go to college and get a degree, in order to create a better life for yourself.
Great question- you get a star.

Does my friend really have a good reason to be mad at his parents for bashing him dream? We Answered:
Even though the odds of your friend playing in the NFL are something like 1 in two million, so the odds are low - yes but what they did was completely wrong. They have harmed their son's health and mental well being by sheltering him like they did. He should have been allowed to play sports in high school, and if he wished, continued to do so in college. It's good exercise and if his grades got too low then he would have gotten a talking to by coach and a school councilor to pick those grades up.Now, they are holding it over his head that they paid for his education, to get into a career that he doesn't really want to be into (although the money is good) and constantly try to manipulate every aspect of his life, even though as you said he could have found his own way financially with scholarships. I don't blame him for breaking contact with his parents and wanting to have freedom to make his own choices and live the life he wants to live!!! I would feel the same way if that happened to me.
As for marrying an Indian girl, and arranged marriage as dictated in their society it doesn't really apply any more as they are living in America now and every citizen of the U.S. of A has the freedom of speech and the freedom to make their own choices.
He should think about what living his own life, and making his own choices means to him. When he figures out how best to explain it, he should confront his parents about it, talking like the mature, responsible young man that he is and get it off his chest he will feel a lot better for having done so.
Melvin Said:
Do you think that my friend has a good reason to close off all contact from his racist parents? We Answered:
Sad story. He has every reason to do what he did. His parents are crazy. Unless they genuinely apologize to him and his wife and ask for their forgiveness, he should continue to cut off all ties with them. He is an adult and they should have treated him like one. Once they realized that he was going to marry this girl, they should have respected him and his decision. In the end, they only ended up hurting themselves and their relationship with their son.Harry Said:
I hate college. What should I do?We Answered:
I also grew up in a Spanish speaking area, and when I went to college, I actually couldn't figure out what was wrong at first. Something was bugging me. And then I realized - no one was walking around speaking Spanish! It was very strange at first, but I did get used to it. What I did was get myself very involved in clubs and activities on campus. I really participated, volunteered to help do stuff, etc. With time, I felt more comfortable there. By the end of the first year, I loved the place. You've been at this place for less than a semester. The way you feel right now re: loss of childhood? That's actually pretty normal. But things like being too far from home, and not fitting in? Those are very reasonable reasons to pick one school over another.
I do suggest you do everything in your power to try to make your current college work for you. Join clubs and activities, and really participate. And do everything not to fail that class. Do not fail that class. Because while you try to make the best of your current situation, I also want you to look into transferring to a school that's closer to home. If you fail that class, you may jeopardize your ability to transfer. So get a tutor.
Do what you can to get involved on campus, but at the same time, as I said, start looking into transferring to another school that is closer to home. Do look at the school that is right near your home, but also look at schools that are a couple hours drive away, because I don't think it's necessarily the case that you have to live at home - you just need to be closer, and there's nothing wrong with that. There are some really great schools in Texas, including UT Austin, Rice, and others.
Apply to a few good schools to transfer. Wait to see where you're accepted, and what they offer re: financial aid. Then decide: are you staying put, or transferring, and if transferring, to which school.
