Law School Scholarships

Tamara Said:

Does the military offer scholarships for law school like they do for medical school?

We Answered:

Yes, if you commit to work for the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) office as a military lawyer, for a few years after graduating.

I don't know the details, but from what I know, the Army, Navy & Air Force JAG offices offer full or near-full scholarships. While the Marine Corps JAG does not offer scholarships because it gets tons of applicants (everybody wants to be a marine!) and doesn't need to use scholarships to attract more.

Christy Said:

is it unheard of for a school to offer full scholarships for law school?

We Answered:

Top tier schools will offer full scholarships. But yes, they are EXTREMELY rare.

Lower tier schools offer full rides all the time. Likely have a handful of full ride kids every year. It's how they attract some of their best students.

If you can make it into a first tier school, you likely can get at least a partial scholarship from a 3rd or 4th tier school. If you can make it into a top 10 school, I can almost guarantee you there'll be some lower schools tossing a full ride scholarship at you.

Ricky Said:

Where do I obtain information for a law school scholarship?

We Answered:

There are many scholarships available, but the vast majority of them are a type of President's scholarship, given by each school. These are highly weighted towards your LSAT and GPA. There are other scholarships, but they tend to be for minority students, which I did not qualify for. But, if you study hard enough and score well on your LSAT, you may be able to get some money from each school. They will let you know how much they are giving you with your acceptance letter or soon after.

Ann Said:

Are there federal or state scholarships for law school?

We Answered:

No, unfortunately Pell grants are only offered towards undergraduate degrees.

As far as federal aid for law school, you are eligible for up to $3,000 in work study, $8,500 in subsidized stafford loans and $12,000 unsubsidized loans. There are also graduate PLUS loans (with a slightly higher interest rate than the stafford loans) that are based on credit that you could use to supplement your aid if needed also.

Depending on your undergraduate GPA and your LSAT score, you could be eligible for scholarship money through the law school itself. Six of the seven schools to which I was accepted offered me some sort of scholarship, ranging from $8,000/year to a full ride. The money is out there, it's just a matter of getting the grades and scores to be able to take advantage of it.

Good luck! :]
