List Of Scholarships

Karen Said:

When scholarships list one of their criteria as "financial need," what do they mean?

We Answered:

Schools use the COA (Cost of Attendance) in conjunction with the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) to determine your financial aid package.

There are two different types of "need": Gross Need and Unmet Need.

Gross Need is just straight COA - EFC (i.e. a COA of $25000 minus an EFC of 3000 will give you a Gross Need of $22000).

Unmet Need is the COA - EFC - awarded financial aid (i.e. COA of $25000 minus 3000 EFC minus $1360 Pell minus $1000 institutional scholarship minus $3500 Subsidized Stafford (freshmen level) will give you an Unmet Need of $16140).

If a scholarship you are applying for lists financial need as one of their criteria, they may need you to submit an award letter from your school to show your need.

You should talk to a financial aid officer at your school for more information. Good luck!

Kristina Said:

Should you list scholarships, honors, and awards on your resume?

We Answered:

I think it's useful to include that section, but there are probably some that you could summarize and take out, especially for things you got in college. For example, if you have multiple semesters of being on the Dean's List, you could summarize it as Dean's List (x semesters) instead of writing out each one.

If you're listing your GPA elsewhere, you could potentially take out awards that are strictly GPA related, because they can already see that it's high, for example.

Are there scholarships for married couples with children?

We Answered:

From what I know and see, getting help is becoming very difficult nowadays!

Don Said:

Can you guys give me a list of scholarships for college for writers or essay scholarships?

We Answered:

One of the things you can do is to search for a very specific writers scholarships or essay scholarship on the internet. Go to Google and start to do some searches on exactly what you are looking for.

If I were in your position, I would do searches for things such as California scholarships, scholarships in California, writer scholarships in California, essay scholarships in California, etc. I think you get the idea!

Just do specific searches, and even do some searches in quotes in Google for what you are looking for. When I say in quotes, I mean "California scholarships" as opposed to California scholarships. This search will pull up all websites with that exact phrase. You should be able to find what you are looking for if you start doing these types of searches.

If you don't find anything, either the information is not posted online, or the scholarships you are referring to do not exist.

Anyways, I hope that helps!

Craig Said:

Where can I find a list of scholarships for those who are not yet in high school?

We Answered:

I don't know of any sites that specialize in scholarships for students who haven't started high school yet, but if you go through multiple scholarship databases like http://www.scholarshipexperts.com and http://www.fastweb.com and http://www.aie.org you will probably find one or two at each. You can also try modifying the search profile to see which awards, scholarships, and contests will be available at 9th grade. Some of the projects for high school students are very involved, and getting a head start on next year's competition would be a great idea!

Also, by looking at the awards he/she will be eligible for in the future, they can see what types of activities and honors the scholarship sponsors are looking for.

My best advice would be to keep looking, even if you don't seem to find much, and encourage your friend that he/she is on the right track. There's no such thing as thinking about funding college too far in advance!
