I'm unforunately not aware of any national NHS scholarships. Your school might have one for NHS, but as mentioned above, you should probably ask the counselor or whoever is in charge of scholarships at your school for more information. As for getting scholarships in general, I would suggest looking locally. Fastweb usually isn't too good beacuse most of the scholarships are too well known and have a lot of applicants, so the competition is extremely high. Local scholarships, in addition to having a smaller applicant pool, are also less well known and thus have a much smaller competition. Also, apply to everything that you are eligible on the local level. Even small ones help.

You'll want to write about how each of those things play a role in your life. The National Honor Society is presumably interested in people who demonstrate various qualities, not just good grades.

For character you'll want to write about how you're a good citizen - helping others, demonstrating moral behavior, etc.

Scholarship - talk about your love of learning either outside or above and beyond classroom material.

Leadership - are you president of any clubs, good at leading small groups in class for projects, etc.

Service - how do you give back to society?

The short answer: Universities have limited seats, and so they have a need to "qualify" prospective students. Belonging to academic societies displays a certain amount of scholastic achievement a sociability. These are considered positive traits for someone hoping to benefit from higher education.

The long answer is largely philosophical and subject to change by viewpoint.

For character and service you could write that you stuck by her and helped her out when ever she needed it. I dont know the situation too well so I dont think I can help out too much. If you were asked to apply that means you have good grades so you can say that you still maintained your grades while you were dealing with this...and for leadership you could put if your were acting like a leader during the experience..
