You should apply for financial aid through the regular financial aid process. The process determines what your financial need is by taking the cost of going to school (tuition and living expenses) and subtracting from it what you can afford to pay (from income and assets). You receive the difference in financial aid. Financial aid includes scholarships, grants, loans, and work study.

Contact the financial aid office at the school where you want to attend and ask them where you should look for scholarships. There are lots of strange scholarships available. When I was in college, I got a call asking me if I was, by some chance, Greek because they had a scholarship for a Greek student. There are scholarship for students with certain majors or studying for certain professions.

This is a website run by Military.com. From the research I've done, it seems to be a legitimate website. It was purchased by Monster.com. It supposedly allows you to search for scholarships for current or former military personnel.

I was in the same boat as you 4 years ago. I did the following things:

1) I start locally. I checked with local banks, clubs, grocery stores, businesses, organizations, and churches are all potential sources for local community scholarships.
2) I checked for state-funded scholarships by contacting my higher education department in my state. They usually have some nursing type scholarships.
3) I checked with the college I was planning on attending.
4) I checked the following websites for possible scholarships. You'd be surprise what type of scholarships are available.
