Zachary Said:

Parents have no responsibility for paying for their childrens education do they?

We Answered:

It is not her responsibilty to pay for college. I understand why you are irritated. And I understand why your dad would be pissed. But there is nothing you can do to force this issue. It is better just to accept it and find a way around it.

$3000 is not a big deal. Tell your dad that you will make up that difference. A very light part-time job will cover this amount easily, and maybe give you some change in your pocket to buy extra coffee! I made more than that just working summer internships. Find an on-campus or near-campus job that you can fit around your school schedule. Lots of us did that and graduated just fine!

ADD: Ok, I have to ask...what kind of school is this that you need scholarships, 2 loans, money from your dad and your own savings to attend? It must be a private school or out-of-state tuition. In-state public universities just aren't this expensive--at least not in my state.

ADD: Ok, I get the picture better now. So the scholarship is really just a token amount. And I'm surprised the loan amount hasn't gone up recently. So, with 2 semesters in a year, you have a total gap of $12000 for the year. I still think you can make this up with a part-time job. Why would your dad pay if she pays, but not if you pay? That seems petty on his part. This isn't about being equitable with her. This is about your future. If you can get him to pay the half, $6000 is still doable for part-time! That is only $125 a week, which is not too bad. Try to break it down rather than looking at the whole sum. Also, you could apply for a private loan as well as the federal loans you will be receiving. I know this is a last resort.

College options and schooling?

We Answered:

You might consider a master's degree in Occupational Therapy, which will allow you to work in a variety of settings. There is particular need for OTs in education settings.
