MOST financial aid is needs-based -- meaning it's based on your parents' financial situation. There is very little merit-based aid, the kind of aid that one gets for being good at sports, great grades, etc. Some schools may have some merit-based aid, but it's usually for top students who score the highest on the entrance exams, etc. Some Catholic schools have merit-based aid, but it's usually for Catholics or students who attended a Catholic K - 8 and usually it is actually partially needs-based. Like if the perfect kid for the award has parents who don't need aid, they wouldn't get it. Merit-based aid is rare nowadays.

First you have to be admitted to the school, meaning that the school feels you are qualified to attend. That will be based on your grades, entrance exam scores and behavior. Different schools will have different criteria. Some schools are very academic, some are more sports oriented. The student has to be the right match for the school. Good private schools usually get more applications than they have spaces, sometimes 3 - 5. Sometimes asking for financial aid will affect your admission to the school, because their isn't that much aid to go around. Typically your parent will have to pay a percentage of the tuition, schools like to give less aid to more students, spread it around. Make sure your parent fills out a financial aid application. All of their info will be kept private and usually only one or two people at the school knows which students get aid, so everything is confidential.

Try to visit the school before they are making admissions decisions and speak to the coach. If you are a really terrific athlete, a real stand out, the coach sometimes can help you to be admitted. However, private schools can recruit from all over, so if athletics is important to the school, they will get the best athletes.

Good luck!
