Scholarships For First Generation College Students

Darryl Said:

I'm I considered a first generation college student?

We Answered:

For federal financial aid, they use the highest level of education completed by your parents/guardians. If they didn't complete college, then you are a first generation student.

However, if sounds like you are dealing with a particular university, and not a federal financial aid source. You'll need to check with them to see what their definition is. Most of the time, a university will only consider you a first generation student if your parents attended NO college (not even for a couple months).

Martin Said:

what are scholarships for first generation college students? How much do you get?

We Answered:

True most of the time there are scholarships that use the words first-generation meaning their parents didn't attend a 4yr university and they will be among the first in their generation to go.

But there are some scholarships for 1st generation Americans- they just dont use that terminology. I know when I registered on fastweb.com they had a few scholarships available for first and second generation Americans. It depends on the country your family is from and if they are underrepresented in college (like Latin Americans). Contact the specific school for more information.

Harry Said:

Am I a first generation college student?

We Answered:

as long as you don't list him on your FASFA or anything and he doesn't claim you on his taxes you should be fine... just make sure that he has no claim to you

Mario Said:

If you are a first generation student do they give you loans?

We Answered:

You can apply for Stafford loans, with no-cosigner & no credit check. Also if you qualify, the Gov't will pay for your interest while you're in school.

You can read about them here. But, I would suggest talking to your financial aid adviser about applying at your school.
