Scholarships For Future Teachers

John Said:

I want to be an Elementary school teacher. Any scholarships for that?

We Answered:

I guess Destiny is giving you pages translated from German because you are using a German name for your avatar?

The majority of significant scholarships are given out by individual colleges and/or universities. Donors generally figure that the schools are better-equipped to decide who are the most deserving students, and so they set standards for their scholarships and then leave them to the schools to distribute them. As a future teacher, what you do is to fill out a FAFSA form when you apply for college. On the basis of that and your application, the college will then decide what forms of financial aid you will get. That way, if someone has given money to fund a scholarship specifically for an education student, your qualifications would be compared to other education students (some scholarships are need-based, meaning that you have a better shot if your family's income is lower, while others are merit-based, meaning that the best-qualified student would get it, regardless of whether or not your parents have money). It also means that you would be considered for scholarships which might be offered to students of any major, but who come from a particular place, or are of a particular gender, race, or ethnicity, or who went to a Catholic high school, for example.

Eugene Said:

Are there any scholarships available for a future Special Needs teacher?

We Answered:

perhaps - but I will tell you that the most expensive schools are not always the best - especially in Special Education. The Universities and Colleges that have staff with acutal experience rather than just the one that think great thoughts and do research - are the best value and you will learn more.

re: scholarships - perhaps check with the university or college you are thinking of - but they would not be large enough to pay a large percentage of your schooling.

Obamas Campaign for Science Teachers Question?

We Answered:

Maybe you should ask the president that.

Nathan Said:

how do you ask your past teachers for copies of recommendations they wrote for college apps/scholarships?

We Answered:

Tell your recommender that you are going to apply for as many scholarships as possible and that you would like multiple copies of the amazing <grin> letter that he or she wrote for you. They can just put "this scholarship" in the spot where they previously typed in the specific scholarship name that you were applying for.

Be sure to be very thankful and I'm sure they will have no problem giving you multiple copies of the letter they wrote for you. They probably saved a copy of the letter on their computer, so it should be easy for them to do a few minor changes and print out the letters for you.

Good luck!

We Answered:

Teach for America allows future teachers to go to college for free, all you have to do is commit yourself to two years where they send you to a school of their choice to teach.
