Scholarships For Immigrants

Delores Said:

Does anyone know of any private scholarships for illegal immigrants?

We Answered:

If you are under the age of 18½, you can go back to your home country (would that be Sweden?) and obtain a valid F-1 Student Visa for study in the USA. You can do this without penalty. It would be as if you were never in the USA illegally. Several private scholarships would be available to you, and you would not have to live in fear of La Migra.

Can "illegal" Immigrants get scholarships or any other help for universities?

We Answered:

I don't believe so. Most financial aid comes from the federal government which would require you to be at least a legal immigrant or citizen or something like that. As far as I know, a lot of scholarships directly hand the school you plan to attend the money. Unless the money is directly given to you, you are most likely not going to receive any aid.

Does anyone knows of good Scholarships for Immigrants?

We Answered:

Hey,
In your community college there has to be a Student Service building, find out if they have a program called E.O.P.S. (Extended Opportunity Programs & Services). There you will find helpful people that understand your situation and will help you obtain what you want. Don't worry, there are scholarship that do NOT REQUIRE you to be a U.S citizen. Some scholarship do require you to be a full time student(12 units of more) but other do not. I encourage you to find this place and don't get discouraged, there will be a way.

Yes - if they have a green card they can apply for financial aid. You can go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ to apply.

where can i get scholarships for illegal immigrants with a GED in colorado?

We Answered:

You may find someone who can answer your questions and not be as rude as many of those who responded here were at the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition:
http://www.coloradoimmigrant.org/

Denver Office:
2525 W. Alameda Ave 300
Denver, CO 80219
Tel: 303-922-3344

West Slope Office:
N. Cascade Ave, #C4
Montrose, CO 81401
Tel: 970-417-6538

You may have to be referred elsewhere, but at least I think whomever you speak with will be honest and kind.

If all else fails and you are willing to consider enlisting in one of the US military services (Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard), once you have been accepted into the military and fulfilled your military commitment, you may legally apply for US citizenship.

A licensed attorney in your area who specializes in immigration law can give you more information on that. Usually the initial consultation with an attorney is at no cost or low cost. Your local public library may have books on the subject on qualifying for US citizenship, too. If you as a reference librarian to help you find information, he/she will keep your request confidential, if you are concerned about your legal status.
