Scholarships For Moms Going Back To School

New mom going back to school and work?

We Answered:

wow. That is going to be a difficult workload. I respect that your trying to do it all, but it's going to be very hard work.

I would lean heavily on your family. If they are supportive ask them to watch the child while working and on weekends so you can dedicate that time to schoolwork. And don't take their help for granted either, make sure you go out of your way to thank them for the assistance. In a few years once you've graduated, have a nice college-educated salary job, and a toddler that actually sleeps through the night you could think about doing something nice for them as thanks ;)

Your going to want to get good at multi-tasking, particularly being able to take care of a child while doing schoolwork at the same time. Many first time parents try spending every second holding a kid, and really it isn't necessary for the child and risks spoiling them anyways. Your want to spend time with him of course, but don't be afraid to teach him that he won't be held the moment he cries. I would also strongly suggest one of those little pouches that a baby can be put in and then strapped on to hold him to you. Infants tend to love those (I think it reminds them of the womb or something) and it leaves your hands free to type at a computer at the same time.

And my real advice would be cut back on the schoolwork; at least for the first semester. What is the minimum number of hours you need to do to keep your scholarship? You can probably get away with doing less then the standard number of credits, which will free up some time for mothering. I would suggest doing that for the first semester while the baby is consuming more of your time and your still learning to balance your responsibilities. It's better to take an extra semester or two to graduate college with all A's and B's then it is to graduate earlier but with bad grades because you were too exhausted to focus on your classes. If you find you can manage the first semester with a lighter course load then by all means feel free to go back to the full course load. In fact even if your scholarship requires 12 hours of credit you could always cheat by taking some pass/fail course and slacking on it (get a 60% and you've got a perfect grade for the course).

I am a single mom of (1) going back to school and was recently laid off. How can I manage financially?

We Answered:

As a single mother you can get foodstamps which will help TREMENDOUSLY. You can also get free medical insurance.
I am not sure in your state but in my state we have a program for single mothers/fathers that if you go to school or work and have a car that needs worked on or you have a car that doesn't even run, they pay the costs to get it fixed up to $3,000. I believe it's called a POV form. Ask if they offer that.
As far as housing, yes you can get public housing or section 8 vouchers. However, section 8 takes a very long time depending on what state you live. I received my public housing in 2 months. Section 8 was 9 months, but I live in a county that isn't highly populated let alone the state. I had to turn both programs down but it is out there for us single mommies.
Since you are going to school, they offer help with books, fees, etc.
Again, it varies so you might want to talk to someone in the welfare department.
Girl, it's there for the taking. Take advantage of it now because you may not be able to get it later!
