They are scams, sorry. The only educational grants are Federal Pell Grants, state grants, and the small federal and state supplemental grants. They are both awarded by filling out the FAFSA and being eligible.

She'll probably have to cobble several scholarships together but as a woman going back to school, she should have a lot of options. There are tons of private scholarships that she can apply for, plus the standard financial aid. She really needs to contact the school she wants to go to and see what they can offer her. Masters programs can also give scholarships for good grades and test scores (if she does well on the GRE, for example) plus there are often teaching fellowships to help pay for college. I don't know about childcare but some places do have on-campus childcare so even if it's not paid for, it could be at least convenient and available.

fyi -- scholarships are usually just checks. So you use it toward whatever you need whether that is purchasing books or paying your rent.

Also -- I'm not sure how relevant mentioning her bad marriage is. But if she has a husband who does not support her (and I don't mean financially, I mean the support she will need as she delves into the crazy all-encompassing world of graduate school), she could have a lot of problems. Might actually be easier to end the marriage first. Just a thought.

Try using multiple databases, and then pay special attention to any results that are only for people in your city or state or the exact school you want to go to. These will have the least competition and the best odds of winning, even if you only find a few per search.

If you know what you want to major in, that will help you get more good results in your searches and those awards tend to have a little better odds too.
