South Carolina Scholarships

scholarships?We Answered:
The best advice I have ever read regarding searching for college scholarships is utilizing more than one approach. I recommend utilizing both the community and web approaches. In addition, I recommend applying for every scholarship you apply for no matter the amount awarded because it adds up. I will include resoures to locate tuition money to attend University of South Carolina.First, complete the FAFSA after January 1 of their senior year and before the earliest financial aid deadline. It will qualify them for need based help from the college. Even if you think your family makes too much money, you should still complete the form. It will qualify them for need based scholarships from the college endowment fund, Pell Grant (if the EFC is below 4300), work study, and student loans. The form needs to be completed every year until they graduate from college.
Second, the high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships. These are typically the easiest to get.
Third, use Google.com and Yahoo.com to search for scholarships and grants from the state itself. A number of states have scholarships based on grades. Most have grants based on financial need.
Fourth, the local public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.
Finally, join several different free membership scholarship search websites. You enter a profile with them, and it will search for scholarships matching their profile. There is a scholarship for almost anything including wearing duct tape to the prom.
Good luck!

About the LIFE Scholarship in South Carolina? We Answered:
Sam:The regulations that administer the LIFE Scholarship program are lengthy, and they can be found, here:
http://www.che.sc.gov/StudentServices/Re…
I did not spot anything in the regulations that would prevent you from postponing receipt of the scholarship for an entire academic year, but at the same time, that question is not directly addressed anywhere in the rules, or in the Frequently Asked Questions section of the official CHE website.
The most relevant commentary is this one:
F. First-time entering freshmen who enroll mid-year (spring semester) are eligible for the LIFE Scholarship if they qualified upon high school graduation.
I would recommend two things - one is not to take a year off from school - but the other is that you contact the financial aid or admissions office at the SC school that you're hoping to attend. Although the question does not seem to be directly addressed in the regs, I'm sure that this issue has come up before, and what you'd really like is something in writing from the school, so that you don't receive a different opinion when it comes time to actually attend.
Good luck.

Good colleges for the arts in or near South Carolina? We Answered:
Colleges in your region that have decent theater programs include: U Georgia, UNC Chapel Hill, U Florida, Florida State, Clemson (which is a public SC school, so for you, a bargain), U South Florida, George Mason, and University of North Carolina School of the Arts. U South Carolina isn't bad, either, and you may want to put that one on your list as well.I have no idea of how liberal or conservative these schools are. You'll need to feel that one out yourself.
