Herman Said:

Is it wrong to snitch on an ex who lied to get a scholarship AND who just got into an Ivy MBA program?

We Answered:

Wow, karma really does exist! I'd say that at the very least you have an obligation to protect your industry from a known liar and cheater. Having just graduated with an MBA myself, it sounds like this guy is giving us a bad name! Our economy is in awful shape from guys like him. Well-educated, but short-sighted and willing to do whatever to get ahead, even if it is selfish and irresponsible. If I were in your shoes I would spill the beans. After all, you can probably remain anonymous throughout this process so there isn't a way this can come back to hurt you. Good luck and I wish you the strength to do what you feel is right!

Tammy Said:

Can someone proof read my essay and change up the grammar please.?

We Answered:

This time tracking assignment showed me how to use my time wisely and more productively. I saw were<WHERE I was wasting valuable time and how to improve it. This past two weeks I realized were<WHEREI could have been finishing homework, BUT I was wasting TIME on Facebook and texting. The first week opened my eyes. I thought I was doing MANY important thingS such as homework and house chores COMMA but when I added up the Whole thing COMMA I SAW THAT I only did about FIVE hours a week ALTOGETHER. I was spending THREE hours a day on facebook and talking on the phone. Now I see why I'm getting 73% in math. facebook is a big distraction for teens. Every time I go on my lap top I want to go on facebook to find out who's dating who and what IS the latest gossip. If I spenT as much time on my homework as I do on Facebook COMMA I WOULD probably be a A- student. Something that stood out to me the most was the lack of exercise I got. I thought I was a very active girl walking home every day, not taking the bus, and eating healthy COMMA but that was not the case. I only got half an hour OF EXERCISE a day. That's nothing compared to my goal. Looking at my schedule COMMA I SEE THAT I have a lot of free time. Every day when I came home COMMA I wondered way the afternoon went so fast COMMA but the Whole time I was watching TV I didn't even keep track of the time. The second week was way different from the first. I kept track of the time; I made a list of what I had to accomplish in a day and my goals that I would like to start in terms of my health and my personal life. The most enormous change was the time I spent on my homework and my goals that I wanted to start. I felt like I was getting more accomplished and I didn't FEEL like I was failing FALLING behind on anything. Every Saturday I usually look back at any work that I needed to finish like homework COMMA finishing my chores COMMA and just thingS in general. But i had nothing to do ON SATURDAY. That was a very good felling FEELING because I didn't have to worry about anything. Something that got in the way was Facebook and MSN. I didn't go on it as much as the week before COMMA but an hour an a half is still a lot TO SPEND just commenting one ON people's pictures and writing on people's pages. I'm not sure how I'm going to use Facebook less COMMA but at least it's not as long as the week before. Another distraction was TV i needed to watch my favourite show like 90210 every Tuesday and The Hills I guess its OKAY to watch few hour a day of television but it fells FEELS like if I stop watching TV I won't see all those commercialS on how you'RE supposeD to look. I won't care as much about the way I look and I'LL just care if I'm healthy. Who really cares if I can fit in to INTO a size zero? It's about being healthy. Your comment on running or doing some kind of fiscal PHYSICAL activity a day to be healthy and not do it because you want to lose weight since you'll gain the weight back anyway, really stuck in my head COMMA and now every time I exercise I'll do it for my health. OKAY, so THESE ARE things i will change: No more than an hour a day for Facebook, AND more time for homework and important things. My goal is to run 3 times a week or do some kind of exercise that getS my heart pumping. I want to take more classes to prepare me for post-secondary and help me get in the university i would like to get into. I also want to look up some scholarshipS out of Canada. This project really helped me use my time more wisely and productively. I should put more time into things that are more important.

I think you wrote a good essay, but I found lots of areas needing correction. It's tough to do here, without being able to use color, so I tried caps for the corrections.

Here are some things you need to watch out for:

were and where....two different words. Were is the past tense of are; where is an adverb similar to there (that's how I always used to remember the difference).

You omitted apostrophes in many words, such as it's (meaning it is), I'll (I will), you'll (you will). Every contraction (combination of two words) needs an apostrophe where a letter is missing.

Into is one word.

Facebook and MSN need to be capitalized because they're proper nouns.

Fiscal is a word having to do with finances; physical is the word you needed to use.

Fell is the past tense of fall, so felling really isn't a word. Feeling is what you meant.

You wrote one (1) a couple of times when you meant on.

We dig a hole in the ground; whole means 'entire.'

Next time you write an essay, try reading it slowly out loud to yourself. Where you naturally pause is the place that you need punctuation ... usually a comma or a period.

I hope you'll send this to me again after you fix it, so that I can make sure you understood my corrections.

Best wishes to you. :)

Help! College student taxes and FAFSA questions?

We Answered:

Wow. Okay. First of all even though you are not required to file your taxes you should as long as your son is in school and you are filling out the fafsa. It just makes things easier.

What you really need to do is go to the school with all of the paperwork that you used in the Fasfas process. Talk to the financial advisor. The school is not the one asking for the information, it is the government. The financial aid representative for the school is only there to help you and make sure that what the form says is accurate to the paperwork you have. If something is wrong they will help you fix it and re-submit it to Fafsa and about 3 days later you will get a new SAR. If they end up making corrections you might have to go back for another meeting at the school.

So basically, take everything you have and make sure that you see a financial aid advisor and not just one of the student workers that help the advisors. Good Luck with everything.

Cynthia Said:

Is there a full-ride scholarship, grant, or any kind of financial aid a deaf student can receive?

We Answered:

I'm deaf and went to C.S.U.N. The Department of Rehab. paid my tuition in full including books. The requirement was that I had to be a full time student. Is there a reason why you aren't interested in using that route? Did you know that CSUN has the largest center on deafness on the West Coast with so many wonderful services. http://ncod.csun.com Try contacting someone there for some advice on other ways to get college paid.

You can receive money from Social Security Disability while in school. The only requirement is that you prove that you are deaf. Apply for both S.S.D. and S.S.I., the S.S.D will be the majority of the payment while the S.S.I. is a little extra on top of that and gives you free healthcare (Medi-Cal). If you only receive SSD, you will only have Medicare and that has co-payment, so it's best to get Medi-Cal also as there is no co-payment on that one. Many deaf students in college are on this. It's about $800 a month. If you find a room to rent for like $400, then that can work out. You can also work part time while on it. What you receive from S.S. would be based on how much you earn.

The work study program is ideal as they do not charge you taxes

If you go to CSUN, you would get even more great services such as having an interpreter (you can chose signer or oral), notetaker, real time captioning (a laptop is used. You read what is on the laptop during the lecture and best of all it is saved, so you have instant class notes to study from) and much more. You can get the same kind of services at other Universities from the disabled services, but they won't be as sophisticated as NCOD (National Center on Deafness). They have everything ready for you! The Dept. of Rehab comes to campus to meet with you and set up everything rather than you having to go to their offices.

Try asking your question at http://www.alldeaf.com in the education section. That is a very active forum with thousands of deaf members. I'm sure you can get some more information from other deaf students or former students on how to make this work. The deaf community is very close knitted and offers a lot of great information and support.

Oh I remember I applied for the Federal Pell grant. That was free money to students that qualified. You have to apply for it early so that you have a chance to get the money. I did receive money that I did not have to pay back. You ask the financial aid office for an application for the Pell grant. Just fill it out and then wait and see if you get something for it. I did this every year. I don't remember what I got as I graduated in 1996. Most people who apply for it, do get something. So put that one on your list as a must apply for.

http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/index.htm…
Program Description

The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate and certain postbaccalaureate students to promote access to postsecondary education. Students may use their grants at any one of approximately 5,400 participating postsecondary institutions. Grant amounts are dependent on: the student’s expected family contribution (EFC) (see below); the cost of attendance (as determined by the institution); the student’s enrollment status (full time or part time); and whether the student attends for a full academic year or less. Students may not receive Federal Pell Grant funds from more than one school at a time. Financial need is determined by the Department of Education using a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the financial information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and to determine the family EFC. The fundamental elements in this standard formula are the student’s income (and assets if the student is independent), the parents’ income and assets (if the student is dependent), the family’s household size, and the number of family members (excluding parents) attending postsecondary institutions. The EFC is the sum of: (1) a percentage of net income (remaining income after subtracting allowances for basic living expenses and taxes) and (2) a percentage of net assets (assets remaining after subtracting an asset protection allowance). Different assessment rates and allowances are used for dependent students, independent students without dependents, and independent students with dependents. After filing a FAFSA, the student receives a Student Aid Report (SAR), or the institution receives an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR), which notifies the student if he or she is eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and provides the student’s EFC.

ADDED: If your parents still claim you as a tax dependent while you're in college, this can affect your ability to receive grants, etc because they will also look at your parent's income and assets as well and can affect whether you qualify or not. So weigh the pros and cons of being claimed as a dependent. If it will interfere with you receiving financial aid, then tell them to stop doing it.

University student Resume: Do I just name the awards/scholarship or do I have to describe the criteria?

We Answered:

See section of sample resume titled "Honors, Awards, and Memberships".

Stella Said:

I was a Dean's List student first year, but now I am failing everything?

We Answered:

Level with your parents and say you can not take your education seriously from home due to the amount of time your commute and courses take. Ask them for assistance and say that you will pay back that money post college if it is really such an issue for them.

You need to be on campus to feel more comfortable with your schedule as well as more motivated. It will also expand your social life which will make you feel less like you are only doing school work at all hours of the day.

Discuss It!
