In this section of StudyUp, we look at popular science fair topics, and obstacles that students will face in the World of the science fair.  Some of our writers were science fair judges at some point in their lives.  Students will gain valuable information here on tips to help gain those beloved science fair ribbons.

    3rd Grade Science Fair

The academic demands on students have increased dramatically in the last decade. There are all manner of standardized tests that students are required to pass. These tests are now administered during elementary school grades. Students are often tracked into certain classes and subjects based on their scores. Many teachers of these younger students no longer have the time during the school day to let the students explore their creativity and express themselves in individual ways. Once exception to this is the 3rd grade science fair. Like the events for other grades, the 3rd grade science fair is the chance for...

    4th Grade Science Fair

Some of the most challenging concepts that students learn in school actually happen during the years spent in elementary school. While this may sound a bit odd to most adults, you must realize that during these ages you absorb volumes of information on all manner of topics. What you learn in school is concentrated on certain topics but the curriculum for those topics is applied to the world in which you live. The more abstract learning comes later in the educational process. For the elementary school students everything they learn has application to the world around them. Curriculum is structured...

    5th Grade Science Fair

When textbook companies and textbook adoption committees in school systems are making decisions for the curricular requirements for students they take into account grade levels. In this way they match the course material with the general development of students in the particular grades. In elementary school the textbooks and course outlines deal with the basic knowledge concepts. These form the foundation for more abstract learning objectives in the later years of school. For the topics contained the 5th grade science subjects the lessons and objectives would focus around concrete concepts. At this age, a student's intellectual development is such that...

    6th Grade Science Fair Projects

In the past few years the science curriculum has been expanded. Beyond the usual biological and physical sciences, the new curriculum includes topics related to environmentalism. We are realizing that the earth is our responsibility and its care should be a priority on our list of life purposes. The curriculum has been updated in these last few years in order to teach the concepts and practices of sustaining the health of the planet. Some of these concepts are not being incorporated into the 6th grade science fair projects. While students are learning the facts and the science in the classroom,...

    7th Grade Science Fair

School systems have spent years and many resources developing the curriculum for their students. While the pupils simply show up to class and participate in the lessons, they do not realize that these lessons have received a great deal of thought and preparation. The experts in learning and education who have devoted their professional lives to determining the correct curriculum for the correct grade level have conducted this thorough preparation. For example, in seventh grade science, students will begin the in depth study of the structures, functions and processes of cells. The students will then take this knowledge to the...

    8th Grade Science Fair

Over the last decade or so the public school system in the United States has focused on a restructuring of the grade level associations in the schools. Historically, the seventh and eighth grades where located in a separate building from the first through sixth grades. These particular schools were called junior high schools. The trend now is to combine the sixth, seventh and eighth grades into a separate school that is called a middle school. There are several reasons for this change. The most influential is that sixth graders are considered too mature to be housed in the same facility...

    9th Grade Science Fair

During the first year in high school, many students are faced with a whole new set of decisions to make. There are, of course, the social ones about who to be friends with and whom to date. But in addition to these there are the questions about which courses to take now that you have a greater variety to choose from than you have ever had before. There are certain classes that everyone takes including a language, math, history and sciences. But different options may exist within each of these disciplines. If you take an honors class you will likely...

    Biology Science Fair

While students are in high school many give a lot of thought to what they want to do with their lives. You get asked this question often at this age, and many students start seriously considering the question. The answer for some is that they want to pursue some career path in the medical field. This may mean being a doctor, nurse, researcher, or some other profession that requires a medical background. Often these are the same students who participate in the biology science fair. A biology science fair is an excellent opportunity for students who would like to further...

    Biology Science Fair Projects

If you were to survey students about their favorite classes you would get responses that cover all the subject areas. A few students would humorously say that lunch is their favorite class, and all the others would name language, history, science, math, music, art, or business classes. All these different classes hold interest for different students in the school. For those who enjoy the sciences, they group of respondents would likely prefer either the physical sciences, such as chemistry, or the life sciences such as biology. For the students who enjoy biology, part of their excitement for this field revolves...

    Chemistry Science Fair

Children and adults alike are more concerned than ever with the sustainability of a healthy planet. There are many local, national and international efforts in place to address the issues that are threatening the Earth. Many students are already personally invested in this topic and participate with their families at recycling efforts and other community clean up projects. Students may not realize that this can become a lifelong career for them. The perfect opportunity for allowing students to explore this subject is through chemistry science fair projects. While some students moan and groan over the topic of chemistry, they may...

    Earth Science Fair Projects

Governments around the world along with private organization and companies are converging and discussing the environmental issues that are facing our planet. These international meetings are attended and lead by some of the greatest minds in the area of ecological sustainability. These leaders have spent their professional careers researching and implementing programs and policies to protect and repair the environment. They did not, however, wake up one day with all these qualifications in their heads. They have spent years and decades studying and researching their chosen field of specialty. Like other professionals, they began their careers as students. Many of...

    Elementary Science Fair

An elementary science fair is an excellent tool for young students to actually see and experience the application of knowledge. Of all the steps toward the acquisition of knowledge, application is the highest skill desired. Teachers strive to reach this level as they participate in the exchange of knowledge with their students. An elementary science fair is one of the best ways to bring the information to life for the students. While there are volumes of data to memorize in the elementary years of school, like the multiplication tables and the different correct forms of verbs, there are also many...

    Environmental Science Fair Project

There are increasing numbers of students who are choosing an environmental science fair project for their school assignments. Hardly a day goes by that there is not some sort of news event on the television regarding the problems we are facing with the environment. These students are choosing an environmental science fair project for school because they are interested in studying this area of science. Many of these students are very devoted to finding solutions to the current environmental crises. They have the long term vision that many adults lack by realizing that what we do now will affect the...

    Examples Of Science Fair Projects

Part of the preparation that is completed by the teaching staff in readying a science fair event is presenting the ideas to the students. Some students are very interested in these types of extracurricular events and other students would just as soon remain anonymous in the back row of the class. This aspect of preparation involves a sales pitch of sorts from the teacher. She or he must present the idea to the class while fostering the encouragement for the students to participate. The prizes and recognition will motivate some students and other students will be motivated by the opportunity...

    Food Science Fair Projects

Of all the interesting topics that students can pursue in a science project most students find food science fair projects the most interesting. This is particularly true for younger students. Their world is comprised of the things that they can see, touch, hear, smell and taste. Food science fair projects are perfectly suited for all younger students. While there are students of high school age that enjoy these topics, they are generally tied to some other discipline such as chemistry or biology. For the younger students the food science fair project is interesting in and of itself. Most students in...

    Fun Science Fair Projects

With all the standardized testing and structured accountability measures that are happening in the school systems today, there is one component that is slowly falling by the wayside. Students are having fewer and fewer opportunities to enjoy their education. Unless they are fortunate enough to have a creative and inspiring teacher, they are simply memorizing the information to pass a required testing regimen. This is most unfortunate because there is no better feeling than having that light of understanding come on in your brain after struggling with some concept. Students are missing the boost to their self-esteem by not having...

    High School Science Fair Projects

Part of the responsibility of school systems and teachers is to gather the support of the students' families. There are some parents who ship off their kids to school without another thought about their child's day. There are other parents that are involved in their kid's education to the extent that they ask "how was school today." Still other parents are active partners in the process of educating their children. The school system and the teachers should try to increase the numbers in the last set of parents. The public is becoming increasingly aware that the education of a child...

    Junior High Science Fair Projects

Students in elementary school will focus on the facts and figures contained in their physical surroundings when they develop a project for science class. This real world approach is appropriate for these grade levels of students. As they progress to the seventh and eighth grades, the teachers will expect more depth to the presentations they make for junior high science fair projects. These junior high science fair projects will often be a challenge for students. This is due in part to the leap some students experience in moving from elementary school to junior high school. There is more responsibility placed...

These events are generally held in the spring term and are available to all grade levels. While some smaller schools will combine all the grades into one science fair for high school, larger schools will have an event for each grade. These science fairs at high school can be organized around the fun activities portion of the curriculum or around a serious competitive approach. A science fair at high school is the opportunity for students to showcase their understanding and...

    Science Fair Hypothesis

Younger students will often participate in science fair by presenting a science experiment that has a predictable result. That is, these age groups will follow instructions and use commonly found materials to demonstrate a fact or interesting tidbit about the nature of biology or chemistry. Older students, however, have advanced beyond simply using experiments that have already been done thousands of times before. At this age they will often be required to develop a science fair hypothesis and take all the necessary steps to prove or disprove that hypothesis. This requirement is designed for the older students because they have...

    Science Fair Ideas

School curriculum has gone through many variations since the organization of public education. Many years ago schools were often isolated and attended by students who had parents that valued the opportunities afforded by education. Not all students got to attend, and if they did it was planned around the schedules of the family. If the family had a farm, a student would be expected to meet their obligations on the farm before having the time to go to school. The curriculum in this type of school setting was not standardized. The teachers would determine what subjects would be taught and...

    Science Fair Plants

Many students who are considering participation in a school science fair often think of the big, eye-catching experiments first. They want to wow their friends, spectators, teachers and judges with the biggest, brightest, loudest or smelliest experiment at the fair. This, however, may not be the way to be recognized. While we all fireworks at the holidays, a science fair is a different arena where thoughtful preparation and extent of effort will carry more weight than a glittery show. One area that is increasing in popularity for students is in the field of environmentalism. These students are planting, tending and...

    Science Fair Project Display

Teachers spend a lot of time in preparation to offer the chance to participate in a science fair to their students. While the students will spend a great deal of effort and thought on their individual projects, the teachers must invest a great deal of planning into the event. They must first decide how to organize the event, and set the criteria for student participation. They must then guide and counsel the students of all ages on choice of topic and the procedures for presenting a successful demonstration. There are often months of preparations that have to happen prior to...

    Science Fair Projects

The use of science fair projects to apply the knowledge learned in the classroom has been a practice in education for many decades. Beginning at the end of the 19th century education was revamped to include all the latest discoveries and innovations of the time. This was particularly true in the area of science. It was not long after this that public school children began making oozing volcanoes with baking soda and demonstrating how a potato could conduct electricity! Science fair projects have evolved as our learning and research has evolved. It is actually quite instructive of the progress of...

    Science Fair Projects Plants

Even though we are now in the 21st century there are still countries around the world that struggle to feed their citizens. There are many reasons for these struggles and many them are specific to the regions that suffer from lack of food. One of the major challenges of these areas is the need for new ways to grow food. Many of the countries and regions are located in areas that are not conducive for agriculture, as we know it. There is hope, and that hope may very well be in the next student who chooses to use science fair...

Not only do the winning students get the accolades that accompany being a winner, they can also receive some fairly hefty prizes. Some of the most prestigious competitions surround the science fair research projects. These are the most...

    Science Fair Students

There are many well-meaning people and groups that take it upon themselves to help students. The latest trends in education include the input from many of these influences. While some of them are indeed helpful, many of them are quite frankly hindering the progress of education. One such program is the No Child Left Behind movement. While well meaning and based on a philosophy that every educator agrees with, this program has severely restricted the teaching environment. That is to say, teachers are now shackled to a standardized curriculum that students are required to master. This mastery is measured by...

    Second Grade Science Fair

By the time a student reaches the second grade, they have exponentially increased their basic reading and math skills compared to their first days in the school system. One of these independent work assignments is often completed for the second grade science fair. The second grade science fair can be a child'...

    Simple Science Fair Projects

Many school systems offer the opportunity for students to participate in local science fairs throughout the year. The elementary and middle schools generally allow every student the option of participating and attending these events. This is because at these grade levels all students are taking basically the same science classes. Once a student reaches high school they may or may not have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning at a local science fair. The reason for this is that some schools only allow honors or advanced classes to enroll in the science fairs. This is unfortunate for those students who...

    Sports Science Fair Projects

When students think of all the topics they could choose for their projects at the science fair, most would consider biology, environmental issues, chemistry, physics and related ideas. Most students would be surprised to learn that they have a common interest with the other students who are out on the football field! The basketball and baseball players also have things in common with the students who participate in science fairs. This commonality is sports science fair projects. While the two topics seem unrelated, nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is that everything we do and everything we...
