Asvab Math Study Guide

Kimberly Said:

Is Kaplan ASVAB 2011 edition a good book to study for the Asvab test?

We Answered:

Ohhhhh yea... that's a good book. i had that edition. it's the best one. it sure did help me and i suck at math i'm sure more so than you do. lol. And scoring a 50 is a piece of cake. You will just have to be dedicated and study every chance you get. i would study atleast a month before the ASVAB. if you don't have the time just use what time you have and study study study. You will do fine. Just relax and make sure you take many practice test. Go to military.com and they should give you a good practice. There should also be practices that you can use throughout the book. Hope you score high! I did good and i used that edition. Be blessed.

What type(s) of math are on the army asvab?

We Answered:

The ASVAB's math is actually fairly simple- you need to understand the following:

1)The military tries to limit all knowlege to the 8th grade level- everything from carrying a rifle to flying a C18 Globemaster. The theory is you can take anyone with a basic education and train them for what they actually need.

2)Specifically the ASVAB is limited by a few algebra questions, and one or two calc, and maybe 2 trigs- if you know it, you'll get it.

3)There used to be several books on how to score high on the ASVAB you could probably find a new copy at Amazon.com

4)Now, I'm an old Drill Sgt from way way back before your parents met- hell kid, I've got a daughter who's older than you. The key to being a successful Officer is to listen to your old Sgts and senior NCO's- in fact, they can make or break your OER (Officer Evaluation Report) even though you fill out the EER's (Enlisted Evaluation Reports).

Keep an open mind, and remember this one fact- don't work the system, but work the people IN the system and you'll make it up to General.

How do you study for the asvab test?

We Answered:

Yeah, I understand. I can't learn math from a book either.

https://www.march2success.com/index.cfm might help a bit.

What help me the most was a math tutor video that my library had.

Dan Said:

what exactly do i need to study to take the ASVAB to get into the coast guard?

We Answered:

The "4 of the 10" are the big four - Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge. These are what comprise the "AFQT", which are the most important sections of the ASVAB. When someone says they got a 75 on the ASVAB - what they really mean is that they got a 75 on the AFQT. The AFQT is what determines if you meet standards for enlistment at all. Currently for the Coast Guard, the higher AFQT the better.

All 10 sections are what's referred to as line scores. These become important when trying to qualify for certain specialities. For example, if you want to be a mechanic, you'll have to have good scores in the sections pertaining to mechanical aptitude, etc. While the line scores are important, they are not as important as the AFQT.

There's some free tests on military.com - you can start there.

Regarding study guides, there are some that cover all sections. Go to a bookstore, they'll have loads. Pick one that includes the detail you want, at a price you like.

Terri Said:

stressed out about the asvab, need answers from people who have struggled as well.?

We Answered:

Everyone is saying "oh its easy! I didn't study for it.. blah blah blah..."
I had a hard time. I can be pretty good in math, but English is not really my first language.
I studied and got a 47, then a 43.
Since it was just English I was having a hard time with, I learned a lot of vocabularies.
It was hard, and guess what? All the words I studied, wasn't even on the test.
But even though I didn't do well in the English part, I did ok on the math part.
I got a 52, and I'm just happy I passed.
Be confident. :D
