What do U of Phoenix professors actually research?

We Answered:

Don't let the ignorant response get you down. You've struck on one of the limitations of places like the University of Phoenix. No one will earn a degree in the sciences at UoP that any employer will respect. Distance based microbiology (for example) just won't work.

You're also correct when you infer that people working on degrees (particularly graduate degrees) from UoP will not likely realize the careers that folks doing similar degrees at brick and mortar universities (even through their distance programs) will one day realize. Much of education, particularly at the graduate level has little to do with textbooks.

Finally, as to the issue of research and grants... No, UoP faculty aren't evaluated by their scholarship. As a result, you might conclude that much of them don't participate in research, though my understanding is that some actually are studying on-line learning which seems logical (though I've never seen a paper from a UoP faculty member). To the extent that this lack of scholarship affects teaching, then you can conclude that UoP students are similarly affected. -Note that I didn't restrict this to positive or negative effects...- Certainly this is critical at the graduate level since graduate degrees are inherently *research* degrees (MBAs are an exception of course).

Finally, the anti-research response above comes from ignorance. Universities are, of course, educational institutions, but this has *always* meant that research is an integral part of the mission of universities. In the sciences, this traditionally meant basic science, not patent hunting as it does to some schools these days. But in response to the person above, research grants are used to decrease the cost of tuition in part, though obviously much of the funds are used for the research itself (gasp!). The research that goes on at most universities provides national and international *service,* not patent development. It is the type of research that private industry would never do as it's too far from possible commercial exploitation and business is nearly always only concerned with short-term profit.

Ive lost all my friends?

I'm kinda like that; the studying of people's minds. If you say online animating and video gaming school is one culprit that did this to you. Then it might be a good thing. What these schools teach you is that you need to think about what the human mind is thinking itself. As you make a game you have to worry about psychological issues. How to lead the user in an environment for example.

Consider like what civil engineers do. These guys build and plan out highways and city streets. They determine how big a road should be based upon how busy an area is, if it's an over crowded shopping area just to say, then the designers may want to build a 4 lane highway instead of a 2 lane one. Because a shopping area will attract many people in the first place you will need a big highway to fit them all. A small highway will become crammed easier and will take longer for people just to simply come or go. You'll need to put up crossing lights for all the people walking around trying not to get hit by a car coming off or on the highway. The lights themselves have to be timed based on how often cars come along and how often people need to cross a certain street. There's much more issues that civil engineers do when it comes to designing something we see simple as a city street.

For gaming it's the same way. The size of a room dictates how much space a player has to move about in and how many enemies can you throw at the user too and so much more different things. It can dictate certain spells you can use. Like I believe in some Final Fantasy games a spell that would produce a 10 story tidal wave wasn't cast-able indoors because the room was just too small to hold it. Gaming and in entertainment in general you have to think and think deep, in psychological ways. You have to be concerned about little things that can mess up the game or person playing it. You want to make sure that things are suitable for the game that's going on there.

So maybe your friends think your weird cause you think more deeply then them, your seeing things more as what it takes to make it rather than just playing it. It's all simple looking at first but gets really deep as you go on. If this is the case then you may have to explain to your friends what your thinking and how it's important in the things we do, I know we may take it for granted these simple things in life like crossing the street, but it's all really deep stuff. Give them a deep example of how things really work and what it really takes to make a game and do animation. Hopefully they will listen, but if they don't which I've experienced a lot, it may be because they aren't into the deeper reasons of how things really work. Maybe new friends that are into the same thing as you is a good idea. As a junior in high school you probably won't keep in touch with most of these folks after you graduate, when your off to college you'll meet new people and maybe if you or them go to college in a different state you'll be away from these folks in the first place. It's not like this may happen but you never know.

Why is it that I can't focus on my studying and straightening my life like I do with my hobbies and interests?

We Answered:

You said you go to church so I'm thinking you could be a Christian. What's important is to know God and what He wants for your life. This takes church, daily prayer, daily Bible reading. Christianity is about faith for sure, a trust, but with love too. This takes a maturity. This isn't just a head thing, a knowing, but also a heart thing -- a willingness to love and commit to God eternally. The most important factors I'm learning are faith, love, peace, hope, friendliness, caring, giving. and meekness, plus obedience. God is our Creator, all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, holy, love. Mostly, God is love and He wants us to be love too and become like Jesus Christ, which takes obedience and faith that He can help us succeed to do His will. Our will needs to be yielded to His will. We need to accept Jesus into our life as our Lord and Savior forever to receive God's blessing and forgiveness plus go to heaven. Having Jesus in your life means changing your life to accept His leadership -- thus He is your Lord, and not just your Savior. He wants to change us to be more like Him. The more we love God, the more we can commit and be obedient. Spiritual maturity comes as we realize that life isn't all about us. Most important is loving and helping God and others. I'm Lutheran and I like the Baptist churches too. Ways to stay on the project are going to church, reading the Bible daily, and daily prayer as needed. I've got a Life Application Study Bible, which has lots of footnotes to help explain what the Bible verses can mean for us today. The New Living Translation (NLT) of the Bible is modern language and easy to read. Some churches do a weekly Bible study group and these can be a good way to get committed to read the Bible often and keep going. Let God guide you. God bless.
