Alan Said:

Study abroad cheap, easy and maybe not through the college?

We Answered:

You can go with another, more local, college. As long as you are enrolled as a full time student in another university, many schools will allow you to participate in their study abroad programs. Some schools even make a big thing of it and actively recruit students from other schools. There are also several study abroad programs not affiliated with any particular school that you could do. You're best bet would probably be to contact your school's study abroad office and see what info they can give you about studying through another school or organization.

What is a cheap way to study abroad?

We Answered:

Honestly you have two choices. Pay up or do the work yourself. These 'study abroad' packages are for the couch potatoes of the world who have never used the internet and think google is a new kind of eyewear.

If you do it yourself you will start by making a decision about what you are going to study. You will obviously need some language skills unless you are going to the UK or Ireland.

Then you can see what is available. For example, Oxford runs some fabulous summer courses that you can take. Universities all over Europe run stuff and usually provide accommodation too.

Use relatives and friends if you want to save money. We have tons of students staying with us every year.

Once you have your course, hop onto the STA travel site and buy your ticket.

Edit: If you want to learn Japanese, you will obviously go to Japan. You will learn just as much Japanese working and living in a Japanese family as you will in a classroom, maybe more. And you will definitely learn more culture.

See if you can find a Japanese family that would like their children looked after for the summer. You can teach them some English too. Take your grammar books and a good dictionary and get going. The trip will be totally free as you will earn a little money, at least enough to cover your ticket cost.

That's how I learned Italian.

What are the names of some study abroad programs?

We Answered:

Hi there.
Study abroad programs usually falls into three different categories on college campuses.
1) Exchange programs - Universities have agreements with foreign institutions that let them pay home university tuition and attend classes at the foreign university.
2) Faculty-led programs – These are programs led by home university faculty. They are usually short term and based on a certain topic, i.e. “language and culture of the Yucatan” or “biodiversity of Peru”.
3) Provider programs – There is a plethora of provider programs that provide a wide range of student opportunities to study abroad. They range in scope, experience, price, and items included for each program.

I would make sure to cover your bases before you decide to take a trip abroad. Studying abroad will change your outlook on life and help you grow and mature. I consider it one of my most valuable experiences to date. With that said, it is also important to receive the support of your home university.

It is possible to study abroad and not receive any credit, but this should be a last resort. If your campus has a study abroad office, I would start there. They can inform you of any faculty-led or provider programs they might work with.

There are many organizations that provide study abroad opportunities for college students. Those programs vary in price and what is included with the program.

Some questions to ask when deciding on a study abroad program:
-Does this price only include tuition and everything else is extra?
-How does this programs help me meet my academic goals?
-Whats included? housing, meals, medical insurance, excursions, flight, etc?
-What happens if I loose my wallet? Is here adequate staff on the ground to help?
