College Study Skills

Judith Said:

How to better develop my college studying skills?

We Answered:

This is what helped me through college:
-sit in the front of the class (for less distractions)
-take good notes
-go over the notes at home, make sure you understand your notes, and attend office hours if you have questions. Sometimes I even recopied my notes
-for math, I liked to work on the sample problems in the book before attempting the homework.
-study groups help a lot. when you teach someone something you actually learn it better...and hopefully, someone else can help you out.
-find time to relax and unwind. don't study 100% of the time.
-avoid all nighters, plan ahead and manage your time wisely
-just remember you are paying for college and it's not free. each class you miss is equivalent of several hundred dollars. Teachers don't care if you attend or not (this isn't highschool anymore)

Bottom line is, the 4-5 years you work hard in college will pay huge dividends when you are out in the work force. I have seen companies that only interview students with a 3.0 or greater GPA. I have also seen many people waste their lives away partying, smoking, etc...and getting kicked out. It's sad to see.

Best of luck to you!

Is it true that you have to study in college?

We Answered:

You sure do, unless you go to a really easy college.

Anyone have any College study tips for a former Home Schooler?

We Answered:

It is too bad that your last attempt at college was not successful, but be assured you can make a different go of it this time. First, I speak from experience. My first attempt at college, a year after high school, was an exciting experience, but rather a failure academically. I was too ambitious and took courses that were way beyond me. In a few classes I did quite well, but in most I hadn't a clue. My next attempt, ten years later, I acheived 2 degrees and a minor only a few courses away from a third degree, all in three years.

Being homeschooled does not guarantee good study habits. I was homeschooled (correspondence) for 2 years in high school and was not much of a studier despite doing well in my classes. First, you need to go to class. No skipping. Take notes and get a note buddy. Note taking is an important skill and it will be difficult at first, but you will getter better at it. Do not try to write everything the professor says, you won't be able to keep up and will miss what is being said. Most important is to listen carefully, jot notes to remind you what was said, and relate the lecture to the assigned readings. Within the day, or next day at the latest, read the notes and your text, preferablly out loud. Tell other people what you are learning about. As you were homeschooled I am going to guess your parents care about your education in a very personal way. Call home and tell them what you are learning. Ask their opinion.

Congratulations on going back to school. We are never done learning. You can do it!
