Gre Study Guide

Brenda Said:

are older GRE study versions ok to use?

We Answered:

Hi,
I took the GRE a couple of years ago and did quite well after studying with a couple of really out of date books, so no, you really don't need the most up-to date study guide.
However make sure not to study the logic portion if it is still included, because that part of the test has been replaced with a writing evaluation. The GRE includes mathematics, a verbal portion and a writing evaluation. The part that used to have questions like, "Sam is sitting next to the heaviest person at the table, The tallest person is sitting to the right of the shortest person, Bob is of middle height, and is sitting next to the heaviest person at the table. Who is Aunt Helen's favorite movie actor?" is gone.
I am joking about how obscure these questions used to be, but it is a relief to many that they are gone.

Another thing to consider when taking the GRE: In the past the tests were given in paper form, which allowed the test-taker to skip difficult questions and answer those that seemed easy. After that the testee could go back to earlier questions and work on them. This is NOT the case with GRE examinations if they are administered via a computer. Each page must be submitted, and once that has been done, it is impossible to return to the page in question. So no more skipping around!

Good luck on the exam. It may seem daunting, but don't let that stop you. I hadn't used algebra in 35 years, but after using a few study guides and an Algebra primer, I scored high in the 600s. If I can do it, so can you. Go for it!

Study Guide for GRE...?

We Answered:

Try one of the Kaplan review books. They also have practice tests and an online component. This helped me for when I took the quantitative part.

Good Luck!

GRE Help - Study Guide Recommendations?

We Answered:

I like the Princeton Review's version. I used theirs for the GRE general and psych subject test and found them very helpful. The subject review was especially comprehensive.

I think the "new test" only means that they are adding a couple of types of questions to the general GRE qualitative section, so it shouldn't matter too much.

Good luck!

What is the best GRE test-takin book/guide??

We Answered:

When studying for the GRE, or any standardized test, for that matter, always use the books published by the test writers as primary sources. Most companies such as Kaplan and Princeton Review publish a surfeit of junk written and edited by twenty-somethings who only rarely have a mastery of the tests on which they're writing. Those who write the test, however, pour boatloads of time and money into ensuring that questions look and feel right -- that is, they aren't unintentionally ambiguous, confusingly phrased, or testing a skill beyond the realm of that test.

So, regarding the GRE, buy and use anything published by ETS, the test writer.

What is the best study guide / method for the GRE?

We Answered:

Without a doubt, the best study guides, programs and CDs are from the. Kaplan GRE Premier Program.
Not a simple book, but a CD and access to constantly updated online material. Download GRE updates and get the latest info on how the test is being revised. Access to practice tests in the book, CD, and online, as well as an online diagnostic test to identify your strengths and weaknesses. a doubt. Good luck.

Is Peterson's a good study guide to use for the GRE?

We Answered:

I haven't heard of Peterson's. I've been using Princeton Review, Kaplan, ETS, AND Barron's. (I have my favorites, but they're all similar.) I'd suggest you go to the bookstore and see if Peterson's is similar. You might also want to pick up a second book.

Gladys Said:

Which book is the best study guide for the GRE?

We Answered:

For the math, I used GRE for dummies and got a 760/800. The math is really all just silly little stupid tricks, just like the SAT math was. The verbal, however, is really challenging. I would recommend seeing if you can get a book that just drills you on GRE words, or basic latin. Because the verbal is a beast! However, I didn't do too bad on it and the only book I used was the For Dummies.

Discuss It!
