Ida Said:

how would you show the core conditions in counselling to s omeone who is suffering from low self esteem ?

We Answered:

Try practising Unconditional Positive Regard (Carl Rogers) and some CBT to get client to focus on their own positive traits.
CBT is one of the best short term interventions for this situation. Once client starts to build self esteem you can start to look at what caused lack of self esteem in first place.
Remember to demonstrate empathy and active listening.

I am currently studying Counselling Skills - what qualification can I do next?

We Answered:

look for the Diploma- it depends on where in the country you live and what approach you want to study, so i cant recommend a college/institution. I was advised to do it after the Counselling Skills course, my bf studied counselling skills...then counselling studies, now he's 2nd yr diploma but i was told by the bacp that you can go directly on to the diploma course.

Marjorie Said:

Is it worth doing a home study counselling course?

We Answered:

Absolutely not! You cannot train properly at home. Counselling is about skills you develop doing role play with other students, as well as a two year work placement. You cannot learn to be a counsellor from home study. Obviously you can study the theory, but the essence of counselling comes from within and is identified and developed via interaction. You won't get a job if you haven't trained properly - and jobs are like gold dust to begin with. You may not be eligible for the British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists by training in this way. If you want to train, please go to college and do it properly. When you have done that, you'll be horrified by the very thought of working with vulnerable clients after studying on your own at home! Good luck if you do decide to go ahead, it's a very rewarding career!

Ideas for part time courses from home?

We Answered:

Look into a TAFE course. These are nationally recognised coarses and are available by correspondance. They also provide you with help via phone or email, with teachers from tafe institutes. Do not use just any correspondance school as you may end up doing a course but finishing without any qualifications. Centrelink can also help out with payments (pending your circumstances) if you use TAFE to do your course.
