Getting a job in international development?

We Answered:

If you have a degree - or any alternative qualification - then you'll already be in front of of the masses when it comes to hunting for vocations. My buddy has a degree and he wasn't certain what direction to go with it, but he found some great tips and tricks on the website in the resource box below which helped him to settle that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is a lot of guidance on the website regarding alternative vocations.

IT / Computing career path for charity or international development work?

We Answered:

In the IT department, charities run much the same as other organizations - they have computers, networks, servers, etc., and need staff to maintain them.

Nonprofits and charities rely heavily on their donor databases. A specific skill computer-related skill desired by nonprofits would be database maintenance - there are many specialized fundraising database programs that are used by nonprofits (Raiser's Edge, Donor Perfect, etc.) and expertise in that area is always in demand.

Which major should I choose, Economics, Geology, International Development or South Asian Studies?

We Answered:

I work in Int'l Development which involves frequent or long term travel to foreign places and interacting with people who often don't think like you. So, I agree with the others that this option would not be right for you. If you were to pursue South Asian studies, after college, if you don't choose to stay within academia (ie go for Phd and teach), I still see a career where you'd have to go to South Asia off and on for related project work. I don't know much about geology but imagine field work usually with a team but at least, I assume, a small team. I've worked with economists too. They can be called to the field to gather data etc but I know many who conducts analyses and write reports behind desks (maybe using data collected from a team member or someone else). So I'd say choose economics. Have you thought of literature or any of the humanities? On a final note, if you choose any regional specialism, you'll likely have to go there and interact with the nationals to balance your theoretical/book knowledge with real world interactions and experience.

Online B.A in International Development, or Development Studies?

We Answered:

Hi Elias

Nobody takes online degrees seriously. Don't waste your time or money.

You are much better off majoring in economics and developing your own program. Do every term paper on aspects of international development, for example.

Good luck to you - you may be president of the World Bank or the IMF some day!
