Study Abroad China

Jessica Said:

Is EducAsian a wise choice for China study abroad?

We Answered:

Poorly run company. Don't use them.

The company failed to provide me the internship I'd been promised until 5 weeks before I was leaving China. Additionally, their program information states you'll have help setting up a bank account, registering with the police and variety of other things required of a resident. Despite 9 days of repeated requests, EducAsian's employees refused to take me saying I could do it myself. I'm intrepid but seeing as I spoke 5 words of Chinese, this was too much for me. Eventually I had a near stranger from Italy who also spoke English and some Chinese take me to the bank so I could finally have access to money. When my group arrived and were taken to th police office for registration, the EducAsian employee left us to find our own way home. The company claims to have near weekly trips organized, many of which are are pre-paid for by your program cost. Less than half of the trips listed were offered. What concerned me the most about EducAsian's ability to provide the services it claims to offer, was I was in Beijing at the company's Chinese headquarters. I can't imagine how much worse it'd have been if I'd gone with a program in a different part of the county. The man who founded EducAsian has his attention drawn to his other (newer) companies he's started in China. When I met with him after my profram had been so fowled up, he hadn't been back to the office in a month. The nice older lady you'll talk to in the NYC offices is his mother. She's the only competent person involved in the company and you'll never talk to her again once you arrive.. Their website shows the real problem with EducAsian, look at their "Student Quotes." All of them are from 2000 or earlier. I do believe that at one point EducAsian was a great program. The owner's attention shifted elsewhere, the quality eroded to the point it is now where you do not get what you pay for. They've stopped taking care of the company.

Study abroad in China or Japan? Pros and Cons?

We Answered:

Hello, I studied in Japan and will study in China next year. First off, China is less expensive overall, but it largely depends on how you choose to spend your money. If you are Japan-crazy and you end up in a metropolitan area, you will probably spend a ridiculous amount of cash on stuff. On the flip-side, if you live in a rural area in Japan, you will not find a lot of things to spend your money on. Same goes for China. If you really want to, you can learn to save money no matter where you are by learning how the locals shop. I saved a lot in Tokyo because my host mom was able to point me to cheaper places to go ( i.e. Mosburger instead of McDonald's).

You should base your choice on where you really want to study, and where the education is best for what you want to study. Nursing is a very good thing to study in Japan, and it seems like you'd rather go there anyway. The cons of Japan- 1) as you've mentioned, inflation is bad. 2) it will not be anything like what you read in books. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but one thing to remember is that all Japanese are not otakus. Most of them don't know anything about the latest anime, or study martial arts, or other "Japanese" things. Also, the Japanese have a strict code of "nihonjinron", or "Japanese-ness". No matter what, it will be impossible to assimilate. As long as you keep these things in mind, you should enjoy Japan.

Now China, I am still investigating. The pro is that your money will go a little further but the con is it's very, very crowded.
