Study Abroad Programs

Kay Said:

Is there any study abroad programs to korea at community colleges?

We Answered:

I don't know if any do. They *might*, so you should ask, because some ccs do offer study abroad. If they do not, then ask them if you do the study abroad via another university, or arrange it on your own, can it count in some way toward your cc degree?

Some universities offer study abroad programs that are open to any college student in the US. So you'd be welcome to do your study abroad, and even earn college credit, from that uni, while you're studying at your community college. As a couple of examples, NYU and Parsons both offer summer study abroad options to several nations.

It's also possible, in some nations, to arrange your own year abroad directly with the foreign university. So that is also an option.

Are there any Middle Eastern study abroad programs for HIGHSCHOOLERS?

We Answered:

First, the bad news. It's most likely too late to do this for the coming school year (2010-2011). The application deadlines are generally fairly early (April 1 for YFU, earlier if you want a scholarship).
YFU, AFS, and Rotary are frequently called "the big 3" when it comes to exchanges - long histories and good reputations, although a few others are making their way up that list. Please forgive my bias towards YFU - it's the one that I have direct experience with (I am a 5-time host mom and volunteer). I am gaining indirect experience by corresponding with former students. When I have asked exchange students why they chose YFU, I get the following answers: (1) YFU gave them more bang for their buck and/or (2) someone they knew and trusted recommended YFU. 95% of the fees collected by YFU go for direct program costs (airline tickets, support in hosting country, etc.). YFU has been around for 59 years and has learned how to make exchanges successful. Which ever program you choose, make sure they are listed with the Council for Standards on International Educational Travel (csiet.org). They routinely audit programs for quality.
YFU does have programs to Egypt and Turkey. Depending upon your definition of the Middle East, these might fit into your requirements. The Egyptian program is only for a summer. The Turkish programs are either for a year or for a summer.
If you had asked this question last year, I would have also recommended checking out the US State Department's YES Abroad program. This program was established in 2008 for American students to go to Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mali, Morocco, Oman, Thailand, or Turkey. The administrators for the YES program were AFS and AYUSA, depending upon which country you would want to visit. Unfortunately, this program was not funded beyond the 2009-2010 school year. The website does not give an indication as to whether or not funding is likely in the future.
I hope this helps! Good luck to you no matter what you choose. (Even if you go with AFS because they offer a country that you would prefer over Egypt or Turkey. :) )

what study abroad programs give you a discount for already knowing a host family you can stay with?

We Answered:

None.
They are in the business of making money, not giving you a discount.
