Study Abroad Summer 2010

Robert Said:

When do study abroad programs to Japan for the summer of 2010 stop accepting applications?

We Answered:

Basically all programs are closed now. Maybe there are a few stragglers, but when it comes to study abroad you don't want to be stuck with what everyone else decided NOT to go with.

They have to do it early because it takes a lot of planning. They have to approve your application and then once they do they have to find you a place to stay. When it comes to host families, they need to know early on how many kids to expect because then they have to go out searching for families who can help out. They also need to arrange for picking you up and transporting you to your destinate once you enter Japan, and since you're a minor they take making sure you arrive safely, on time, and generally in a big group very seriously. They can't have everyone planned to be leaving on X flight from X airport and arriving at X time and then have someone come in at the last minute and do something completely different. The Japanese really don't like to function like that.

Just ??????? is all that's needed.

Denise Said:

What study abroad programs are available for students that are 17 years of age in Belgium, France, or Spain?

We Answered:

What about an exchange program like YFU, AFS, EF, or NYU? I believe they all do summer exchanges aimed at high school kids (usually 15-18). There is Rotary too, but Rotary prefers year-long exchanges in most places.

You can find all of those easily online and they are all good programs.

Willie Said:

study abroad programs?

We Answered:

I know that AFS and Rotary International are two very good and trustworthy programs, both of which have sent hundreds of thousands of students abroad. Some other program names that I have heard of people liking are CIEE, AYUSA, and YFU. Do a little research on google, and then find reviews by people who have gone on exchanges with that program. For example, I am currently an AFS student on a year abroad in Germany, and I love it. AFS has a great support system so that you always feel like you have a way to contact someone in case of an emergency. Good luck!

Study abroad and admission at the Ivy...?

We Answered:

It won't help enough to justify taking out a loan if that's the only reason for rushing your plans. Competitive universities like study abroad experiences, true, but they also like applicants who spend the summer volunteering in their communities or working a full-time job or even doing independent study. It's more about what you get out of it than the experience itself.
