I study/work in DC, my permanent residence is MN do I need to file in both states?what income should I file?

We Answered:

Did you include the DC income on your MN return? If not, you should have. If you file to DC then you include only the money you made there. Mn will show the credit paid to another state.

How does work study work?

We Answered:

it depends on your school,
in my school you have to find your own job but they have a website specifically for that
you should call the financial aide office and ask them if they have an online job search/bank etc...
most of the jobs will be on campus, and some off-campus
work study is good because your earnings doesn't affect your financial aid next year and they do not take out tax from your paycheck (with some exceptions)
and also because they usually have flexible hours and sometimes you are able to do homework on your down time

How does work study work in universities?

We Answered:

Only students who submitted a FAFSA which determines whether you will be able to received financial aid through work-study or not. Then if you qualify, you have to find a job on campus (usually easier than non work study students to find jobs) and then you will receive money towards your education.

How many hours to work per week to balance university study/work?

We Answered:

I try to think of University as a full time job. I have five classes, and try to assign 8 hours each week to class time. This makes your school week 40 hours long. Of course busier weeks you may spend more time, but this is on average.

If you work 20 hours a week, that still leaves 108 spare hours a week for commute, meals, social life, sleep etc. This is what I did and found I was still definitely able to balance my life. I've seen other people do more but I truly believe that it can be too overwhelming (I mean maybe up to 25 on slow weeks but thats about it)
