I want to be good at english grammar/vocab?

We Answered:

I think that this is an excellent site for help in learning and practicing good grammar (my aunt is a high school English teacher and also teaches English as a second language, and she recommends this site also):
http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar

This site has much for all skill levels, so I think you may find something useful. Please do not be offended if your skills already surpass the level of info/help offered there. I would have never guessed that you've only been speaking/writing English for four years. You already possess a better command of the language than some for whom English is their first (and only) language.

A few areas of this site which you may find particularly helpful are: English Tenses Overview; General Information on Writing English Texts and General Information on Spoken Texts (found under Essays and Presentations). Also, if you visit the teacher's section "Teach In," you can find areas in which English teachers feel special attention need to be given. Finally, if you go to the teacher's board you can communicate with others wanting to improve their speaking and writing skills, grammar, etc. and teachers willing to give online advice.

Edit: Sly Fox [King of Fools] advice to read the dictionary from cover to cover (Or was he advising against it? <grin>) may sound a bit strange, but there really is no better advice for improving your vocabulary. If you love reading, language and words in general, as I do, this will be an easy task. If not, this advice will be very hard to put into practice (and very boring) =). Also, while reading, NEVER pass a word if you are not completely sure of the word's meaning--always stop and look it up. =) [The ego4u website and I disagree on this subject. It concludes that reading comprehension and intelligent guessing are sufficient for learning the meaning of a word or phrase. At times, this is true, but for the most part, I strongly disagree.]

How many years of English grammar is studied at an American school?

We Answered:

From the grammar used by supposed high school graduates, I'd say maybe the equivalent of a year or two. Grammar seems to be a lost art. The 'all aspects' as noted in a previous answer seem to take the lion's share of the class time - grammar is given short shrift.

One of the problems is that the grammar used by the teachers is sadly deficient. If your child/grandchild/nephew/whatever gets a written communication from school, take a close look at it. If it's more than two paragraphs long, I'll bet there's at least one error in it.

It's a sad state of affairs.

How to improve your english grammar?

We Answered:

Make friends with a native speaker and ask questions as they arise.

Written is always the hardest part of learning any second language. I have studied German, French and Spanish. I am most successful at German because of the length of study (9 years), but more importantly, because of the intensive experience I had living with a German family for 2 weeks.

The more exposure to native speakers in all types of settings the better.
