Study Habits For High School

Jo Said:

How can you turn around a resistance to studying in high school to be prepared for college in the fall?

We Answered:

Creative people have different learning styles. High school doesn't encourage or embrace different learning styles. She will probably have a better time in college, however, she needs to know her first couple of years will be the basic classes and she will have to pass them to get to her desired classes in her major. Community Colleges have a lot of supportive tutoring and other services she needs to take advantage of. She could also take some diagnostic tests that reveal her own learning style to her so she can start to work smart and in sync with her style.

Good luck!

Why dont they teach study habits in school?

We Answered:

How exactly do you propose they teach you how to study? Everyone studies a different way. What works for one person may not work for another.

I know, personally, I need to drill things into my head by repetition. Notecards are very handy, in that sense. It's the only way I can actually retain the information.

My brother, on the other hand, merely goes to class, reads the book, and listens to the teacher. He doesn't bother taking notes - after hearing it, he knows it.

It's difficult to teach something that can possibly go so many different ways. Some people like to study in silence, others like background noise. Some need to take extensive notes while others spend most of their time doodling in the margins and do just fine. At a certain point in life you need to take things into your own hands - whether that means teaching yourself to study, or knowing when to ask for help doing so.

Joe Said:

I have aspirations of becoming a pediatrician, but my study habits are horrible. Is it too late for me?

We Answered:

I am currently in professional school and grades are only one of the considerations when applying to these types of schools. Yes, they want to see that you can master the material, but they are also interested in what you will bring to the profession. For example, volunteer work or having a job related to medicine can help you get in to professional school.

Having said that, it is important that you refocus and work to improve your grades. Try to study a little every day instead of cramming the night before a test. In addition, find a tutor if possible to help you in classes that you have difficulty with. Some people find that studying in small groups can help a lot too. If you want to go to medical school, you will need to find a way of studying that allows you to learn the material- professional school classes cover a lot of information much quicker that undergraduate classes.

How do I find motivation to do school work?

We Answered:

College is a big adjustment. Part of the problem is developing a new routine. See, in high school you had a little more structure, where College expects you to manage your time yourself.

First ask yourself, when do you feel the most productive. Some people get more things done in the morning and some at night. Figure out when you are more likely to get school work done and set aside specific time.

Once you add a routine and focus on times you are more likely to study, you're motivation will return.
