Study Photography In London

Naomi Said:

a degree in fashion photography?

We Answered:

A degree is always a good thing, london is very expensive and I have heard some bad things about the courses there. (I'm currently studying in edinburgh) but Glasgow school of art is the best in the country, form what ive heard.

Being a photographer isn't easy and the work is never garanteed, however if your going to work really hard at it then you will find work, or be able to set up your own studio, there are alot of wannabe photographers out there now a days who think that a digital camera makes them a pro. This is good and bad, its bad because the market is saturated however its also good because if you spend time getting really good you wil be able to outshine the lot, and job should fall into your lap.

Study In London - Finance Worries?

We Answered:

As well as your student loan, which you only start to repay once you have graduated and are earning £15,000+ per annum, since you come from a low income family it sounds like you'd be eligible for a maintenance grant. They're available for those from low income families and you don't have to pay them back, check out the unis website for finance details on this as amounts vary between unis.
Universities also sometimes have scholarships or grants available for some students doing some courses so you should check that out in the university prospectus to see if anything applies to you.
You could also get a part time job as a waitress where you'll also get tips, or in a shop or bar if you find your student loan isn't stretching far enough.
And the university will help you find accommodation. I would recommend living in the university accommodation for the first year (cheaper and easier to make friends), this will be the easiest way to get accommodation as the uni will just give you forms to fill in and they'll allocate you a room.

Why not open a savings account if you are awful at saving? Just put in what you can spare each month (even £10 each month will help but obviously put more in if you can). You won't earn much interest in a year but its good if you are rubbish at saving because you can't take money out whenever you like, a lot of them only allow one withdrawal a year.

Joe Said:

where should i study photography at uni?

We Answered:

Before you can specialize in a particular field of photography, you will have to spend a few semesters learning the basics and in reality it is later after school that you really can learn the business of architectural or still life (similar to studio product photography) photography, usually by working as an assistant to a successful pro for a few years.

The goal of a photography education is to provide the student with all the skills necessary to be able to produce images in any field of photography, using any camera (film or digital) on demand. Learning specialties comes much later

When I was attending a proper photo school, my major was industrial/scientific photography so I got to learn all the cool stuff like shooting IR, UV high-speed strobe, photomicrography and much, much more. I worked as an investigative photographer, medical photographer, industrial photographer and worked for a wild animal research institute based upon the skills I learned while in school

Now many years later, I find myself working for magazines shooting mostly advertising, sports, editorial and fashion work ... a far cry from industrial/scientific photography.

All this to say that the basic skills necessary to provide perfect images on demand is the same, no matter what field you shoot in. Yes the equipment may differ, but after attending any good photo school, you can use any camera at any time under any conditions.

Just take all the courses offered in your school, attend seminars and workshops and eventually you will have the skills you need to pursue your "dream" job

If you can join a professional organization as a student member, you can start your networking while is school and be just that further ahead.
