Study Skills For Kids

Chris Said:

What do you think kids should be taught in school, that they aren't already?

We Answered:

I think a lot of what they are taught in High School is unnecessary. I think time could be better spent teaching kids:

A) Personal finance -- How to stay out of debt, How to balance a checkbook, How to save money, How to set up a retirement account, How to manage money.

Too many kids are in debt up to their eyeballs before they even finish college. They have car debt, credit card debt, college loan debt....... and yet they're supposed to be able to buy a house in a record-high housing market? They need to understand how money works!

B) LOCAL History & Government -- So much time is spent on US and International History.... If we want kids to take pride in their communities, vote in local elections, and take care of the community in the future, they need to be taught how the community works.

Face it-- very, very few high school seniors know what a city/town council is or how they work.... Very few high school seniors know how city/town government works.... Very few high school seniors know if the tax rate in their town is high compared to other towns. Teach them how their government works and they can vote responsibly.

C) ELECTIVES are often more important than Core Curriculum. Cut back on core curriculum. Let kids explore their interests-- art, music, business... whatever it may be.

Ok... that's my take on it. :)

Since we never learn from our mistakes, why do we study history?

We Answered:

I must agree with you! I also love history too. I am a science nerd but I love reading about war and social problems in my free time to help expand my thinking. I try and look at both sides of the issue and make a decision based on what I feel is the right side. We tend to never want to learn both sides or ask ourselves questions when it comes to readings.

My favorite subject is biology and I love reading about history in my free time. Obama want to reform our entire education system so we won't continue to produce failing kids and inactive teenagers. I am a good student. I am a senior and I am in a variety of acedemic extra-curricular activities. I make mostly As and a few Bs here and there. I volunteer at the hospital and I also volunteer at the democratic headquarters campaigning for Obama.

Its sad to see kids now tell you that they don't care who becomes president or that school sucks. 50% of all our doctors, scientist and engineers are first generation IMMIGRANTS. The same ones we detest and want out of our country. Maybe if we had a higher standard of education then we would not have to go to other countries just to find intelligent people.

To the people saying that Obama is a communist/socialist/etc, do you even know what that even means?

How do you S-T-U-D-Y? Parts to whole concepts? Terminology? Story comprehension? Basic math? Be specific!?

We Answered:

Read the questions 1st! Then write down every bold print title and the italicized words and their def. for the next days lessons. Then read that portion of the text.. You will be prepared to understand what the teacher is talking about in class the next day.. Then do the assignment as the teacher assigns it. Proof read all answers and correct it and turn it into the appropriate place. When home do any assigned work, go over graded papers and correct any mistakes in writing(for yourself-- even if the teacher gives pts for redo work)Then it is study time. When reading for comprehension in a library book write down the characters as they show up and tell who they are in relation to the main character. Write down places, cities, year, century, etc. When you finish reading for the time period, read over your notes and put the notes with the book or have a certain section in your notebook for library books. All subjects can use this system.

How can you teach your kids to remember homework, do it themselves and like it?

We Answered:

You sound like a single mom trying to take care of everything yourself. So I guess that homeschooling is probably out of the question.....
As hard as this is to say, I recommend letting your son reap the consequences of his refusal to work. The more you help him, the more he will resist. He will get to a level of work where he simply can't do more and if you try to force more, he will rebel. Let him fit himself in to the new routines, make friends and learn the ropes himself, and take responsibility for what comes of that. You should be there to simply support when he asks.
Many young men try really hard to get out from their mothers' oversight and authority in their lives. I think it's a natural thing. But mothers have a hard time seeing it coming and want to hold on and take the same kinds of responsibility that they always have. Loosen the strings...... if he falls, he has the strength to get up, and if not, he needs to learn the lesson for himself.
And if you're NOT a single mom, get Dad in on this. Hand over the responsibility to him, and leave it there. (no easy answers, I know!)

Joanne Said:

Why are people so against daycares?

We Answered:

There are some horrible day cares out there. Regulations have gotten tougher and there's more oversight now but it's really up to the parent to find the best daycare they can. There's lots of info on-line about what to look for and even sites that help you find situations in your area.
