Study Skills Games

Judith Said:

Hey, when I get older I want to make video games as my job, so what are some skills I should start to learn.?

We Answered:

What part of the game do you want to work with? If you want to build the base program you should start learning something like Visual C++.

For graphics like sprites or textures, a photo editing software and some computer and film graphics books would be a good start. Also, get the PC game called Doom, the old one not the new one, and get the editor called Wintex and use it to extract the sprites from the game. You can open the sprites in a photo editor after you use Wintex to extract them. Look at the sprites and learn the basics from them, it is a good way to learn how those things are made.

For more realistic games, a 3D modeling program like Maya, XSI or 3D max studio will need to be in your arsenal. I myself have studied all of the above for my future CG career, sprites, 3D models and Visual C++, so I have a basic know how on all of them. My main focus is in CGI for films and of course good old fashion pencil and paper, but I have played around with Doom and that was how I started out.

As for subjects, art is the main focus for graphics of course, but a great knowledge of computer programing is needed for the base program of a game. Because I’m not making games myself, I can’t really say what other subjects you will have to learn. Sorry, but I hope this info does help some.

If you need any help with Wintex, feel free to drop me a line!

Harold Said:

what programming skills do I need for computer game design?

We Answered:

You'll have to use a language like C++, C#, Java, or VB.NET. You'll have to build a server system, you'll have to build a game engine, graphics (if needed), game content, and then you'll have to build the client that people will use to play the game.

Given your admission of very limited programming experience, it will take you probably around 2 to 3 years to develop your skills to the point where you can build this type of system. Then, if you are working alone, probably another year or two to build the game.

Christian Said:

is there any gamnes for accounting? i mean any games that will just improve your accounting skills?? PLS.?

We Answered:

You could try some of the Smackdown vs Raw games, they have a managers mode, where you manage a wrestling show, that includes budgeting and such, you could also try Simcity, the Sims (Without cheating), Most RTS, involve planning with finances. Really if you think about it most games out there can teach you skills with accounting and management.

Peter Said:

Are skills acquired from gaming transferable?

We Answered:

That depends on:

The game

The individual

The skills involved

Games have been known to help memory and dexterity.
As far as instant muscle memory transfer that is not really likely.

What are some useful games that my students could play in class to practice their Spanish skills?

We Answered:

Depends on what skill you want to practice. When I'm teaching verb conjugation I use the dice game. 2 sets of die 1 is for 6 verb and the other is for the subjects in spanish (yo, tú,etc) Students role the dice and conjugate the verb according the subject of the other dice.
One of my favorite games is the story game(which targets speaking ability) where I start out the class with one sentence example (Hay una chica). Then the other students raise their hand to add to the story. I usually give them a piece of paper or bingo chip every time they add something. Usually they have to earn 2 or 3 chips to get a perfect score and the others can be used as bonus.
Number game-Take a beach ball and have the students count in spanish up to whatever number. You start with one, then the next students who hits it says two in spanish, the next one three, etc. I have also used the ball to practice vocabulary words, spanish speaking countries.
