Undergraduate Study Abroad
Geraldine Said:
Studying abroad as an undergraduate student? We Answered:
When a student studies abroad often depends on his/her program (major) and university. As mentioned, it is common to study abroad sophomore or junior years because of university requirements. Having a particular major may affect when you can study abroad too, because of on-campus class offerings or programs abroad that serve your program. Here are some things to think about before you check in with your university's study abroad office:
* Do you have a major? How will studying abroad contribute to your major? (it's a good resume booster, especially if it's relevant to your field)
* When do you want to go?
* How long do you want to stay abroad?
* Is money an object for you?
* What traveling might you want to do before/during/after studying in that area?
Here are some questions to ask of a study abroad counselor:
* Are there major restrictions (you must have a particular major declared) on the locations you want to study?
* What program options are available or beneficial for your major?
* When is the best time for you to go?
* What are the financial aid opportunities and procedures for studying abroad?
* How much are the university fees associated with studying abroad? (in addition to paying for the program abroad)
* Is it possible to participate in a non-university sponsored study abroad program for credit? (in the case that you are dissatisfied with your school's options - I did this for one of my programs)
I recommend that you check in first thing with your university's study abroad office. They likely have information posted online that you can browse and then more information and resources available in their office. They can guide you through the process of researching and selecting programs, applying for programs and financial aid, preparing for studying abroad, and returning and transferring credits. Substantial study abroad offices ought to have students who have studied abroad that you can talk to for a more personal understanding of the process and experience.
You might even consider multiple study abroad programs - particularly in Europe because Italy and England are so close. You might be able to do back-to-back programs or you might be able to pull separate stints at a student abroad! Plan ahead because the languages and cultures in each of those places are so different and you'll want to have time to prepare.
I personally recommend waiting until at least your sophomore year. I think it's important to establish yourself at your university before you take off. :) You'll want to figure out university life, make friends, and decide if your major is right for you, particularly because that may affect your study abroad options!
Studying abroad is so rewarding! You're absolutely doing the right thing! Best of luck!

what is the maximum amount one can get by scholarships to study abroad undergraduate level? We Answered:
If you go to fastweb.com there are scholarships that will give you full rides. For some it has to be to a country that english is not the main language, and you have to pass a test that shows fluency in that language, but there might be others that will allow english full rides......good luck!Ron Said:

study abroad: overseas student studying in UK, looking for undergraduate placement in US?We Answered:
If it is just a placement for a year, then you are looking at a J1 visa. I suggest you do some research on viable companies and the travel.state. website is a good source of information. As salaries, you are looking at entry level if not less considering you are on a placement/internship. If you mean work permits after your placement, they can petition you for one if you have a bachelor's degree, but they are under no obligations to do so.
