College Study Abroad Programs

Morris Said:

how are the study abroad programs through college?

We Answered:

While I understand that this is a huge choice for you. There is nothing saying you can't go to a state school and study abroad. There are numerous exchange programs through colleges that would be the same as your tuition. Scholarships and financial aid usually transfer for these programs. The program I went on was through a different college than the one I was attending. Due to the fact that we had an exchange policy for them I was able to go abroad for the same price it would have cost me to be on campus that year.

Are there any legitimate study abroad programs for college credits.?

We Answered:

If you want college credit you absolutely need to get it cleared with your college before you go. Check with your study abroad office to see which schools are programs other students from your college have been happy with. It's easier to get courses approved if they've been approved before, but you're definitely not limited to just those programs. Do your research.

I personally would avoid any program that 1) is not an immersion program; 2) does not include a homestay and 3) does not either enroll you in a foreign institution or get your highly involved in your community. So many people go abroad and miss the whole point because they spend the semester partying with other Americans and taking classes in English (unless of course you're in London or some other English-speaking city/country.) Enrolling directly in a foreign university will give you the best taste of real life in that culture, though you'll get a lot less support than you will from a program.

Melvin Said:

I want to study abroad during college, but can't find a chemistry/pre-med exchange program. Are there any?

We Answered:

believe it or not hte best way is not to go with a program. instead start emailing schools. your school will have a list of every school in the world that accepts transfer credits from. so email schools where you want to study, in that if they have classes you need and what are the requirements to study there. it takes a lot of time, BUT it will be cheaper, plus you have a lot more control over your studies. the downside, it takes time, paitence and time.

good luck.
yes it does work, how i am studying in china and i do not speak a word of chinese...

What are some good college programs to study abroad with?

We Answered:

There are plenty of study abroad opportunities- especially in Germany. It all depends on where you want to go, what you want to study, and how long your stay will be. Some good programs or organizations to check out for Germany: AIFS (American Institute for Foreign Study); IES (the Institute for the International Education of Students); and CEA (Cultural Experiences Abroad). Many U.S. universities also open their study abroad programs to visiting students; you could look at NYU, UC Berkeley, Rutgers, etc.

If you need a place to start your search, I work for a company dedicated to helping students go abroad. The website: www.gullivergo.com has a database of programs you can peruse. You can search by location, area of study, or time of year. There are plenty of options for Germany. There are also discussion forums where you can talk to students who have studied abroad or are currently abroad. If you do find a program that's right for you, the website can help you with the admissions process, obtaining a visa, passport, flight information, and direct you toward any necessary contacts to help you on your trip.

Discuss It!
