Gmat Study Guide

Rodney Said:

Can someone give me advice on my GMAT study plan?

We Answered:

I found that the practice tests misled me. The GMAT was nothing like them and in actuality, lowered my expectations. I should have stuck with the books because the example questions were much more representative of what I found on the exams.

Ironically, I am mentoring a student who has taken the MCAT twice and he discovered the same thing with that test.

I found of those you are studying, the Office GMAT study guide, Kaplan and Princeton Review were most similar in their practice questions to what you will find on the exam.

Vincent Said:

What is the difference between the official Kaplan GMAT study guide and the Official GMAT guide? Thanks?

We Answered:

I use 2-3 when working with people studying for the test. Each guide offers a different approach to taking the test, and emphasizes different areas.

What is the best study guide for GMAT prep?

We Answered:

You're on the right track as my motto studying for the GMAT is study in print and practice online.

The only book I used was the official GMAT review books which can be found in almost any bookstore. I supplement that with online materials. Here is some to consider.

If you haven't already you can get free GMAT practice tests at the GMAT homepage. http://www.mba.com/mba

I also used http://www.bellcurves.com They have more questions, quizzes, tests with features to find your weaknesses. There is a free option you can try. There are also free GMAT lessons (no sign up) you can take advantage of. http://gmat.bellcurves.com/free-gmat-pre…

I also went to http://www.beatthegmat.com a lot when I was studying. It is a great GMAT forum/ community where you can get more tips/ advice/ materials with a quick response time.

Hope this helps and best of luck.

Alan Said:

Has the GMAT test/study materials changed since 2003?

We Answered:

I know they have changed some...I'm not sure if the changes were "material" in nature...I do know that test scores have become a lot more competitive over time...What was a good score 7 or 8 years ago has become far more mediocre these days...I don't know that people are necessarily getting "smarter", but they are becoming wiser in seeing the value it can bring and many folks without business backgrounds are trying to get that diploma and the career prospects that acompany it....Good luck, I'm sure that the book is better than nothing, but if you could go ahead and get a new one...I used Petersons in 2007, a little more recent, and found it to be helpful.

What is the best guide to study for the GMAT?

We Answered:

Start by downloading the GMAT Prep software. It's two real CAT tests, and its free from http://www.MBA.com . Taking one of those will give you a really good idea of where you stand score-wise.

Second, go get all three GMAT Official Guides. There is the general one (12th edition), and then the smaller ones for quantitative and verbal. They each have different questions, and you need to get as many different questions as possible. All the questions in each book come from actual, former tests.

Last, buy some study guides. I like the Manhattan GMAT books (http://www.manhattanngmat.com ), but they are a bit short at times, and not necessarily written in the easiest way for self-study. Powerscore (http://www.powerscore.com ) has sections on sentence correction and critical reasoning that really helped me. Here's how I'd break it down in terms of what to get:

Verbal: The Powerscore GMAT Bible that covers this topic

Math: Manhattan GMAT guides for these subjects

As far as tips, study hard and set aside time daily to to look at techniques and to work through problems. Do not try to cram for the test! Also, visit some of the popular forums like http://www.beatthegmat.com to see what other people are doing and to get some help and support.

Good luck!
