High School Study Abroad Programs

Dwayne Said:

Which study abroad programs help with high school credit?

We Answered:

Talk to your high school guidance counselor. I studied abroad during my junior year, and my high school gave me credit (pass/fail) for the classes I took overseas. I had to "double up" on English and social studies my senior year to get the credits for my diploma, but those were the only required credits that I missed out on -- I got my junior year science and math credits for instance, and obviously foreign language credits.

I actually don't know any exchange students who had to spend an extra year in high school... all the other American students w/my organization in the host country with me had all worked out credit agreements with their home high schools prior to leaving. Some doubled-up on credits before leaving (cutting out electives and study halls), some made arrangements to take a few required classes in summer school, and others doubled-up on credits after their return.

All of which is to say, talk to your guidance counselor, because this is really going to depend on your school (or district) and its policies.

Good luck! I never regretted being an exchange student. Even if I did have to repeat a year, it would have totally been worth it. Being an exchange student changed my life.

What are some good study abroad programs for high school summer sessions in Japan?

We Answered:

The summer as in this summer right around the corner?
It's more than likely too late to apply now for most programs. LanguBridge's summer program in Tokyo still [barely] is open: http://www.langubridge.org/tksumfee.htm but it's quite costly and does not include airfare (flying to Japan and back is about $1200USD). They also don't have the best reviews (mainly the testing was too difficult and the classrooms too cramped).

Although I am almost 100% sure application is closed now because usually it ends March 31st, for next year (anyone can attend of any age) you might consider keeping an eye on the America-Japan Grassroots Summit. You and a group of others go to a city in Japan usually spending a night in a traditional inn, then homestaying for about a week, and then you go on to another city of your choice. Most of the cities they send you to are small and more rural and so the city after that is usually much bigger: like Kyoto or Tokyo or whatever you choose. During your homestay you spend a lot of time being guided around by the people in charge of the program, but on your other trip you're basically free to do as you please and you don't have a homestay family at this point in time either. You don't take any language classes in particular, but you do visit many cultural sites. I went in 2007 so if you want to know more you can ask me.

Does any one know any GOOD study abroad programs for high school students or Volunteer programs?

We Answered:

Hi Dana,

You should definitely check out http://www.ChoiceCamps.com and tell your cousin about it. This is a free teen travel and camp referral service where you can search for travel, academic and volunteer programs throughout the world. You'll be able to compare programs and prices, check out their activities, watch dvds and view pictures.

There are many programs all over the world that offer travel and volunteer programs for teens over the summer. Choice Camps networks with camps in Europe, Africa, North America and Latin America. Many of these programs are month-long as well. I suggest you check out Global Works: France. Your cousin can learn French, work on community service projects and meet new friends; all while experiencing French culture! For more information, check out: http://www.choicecamps.com/teen-tours/gl…

Good luck with your search, Dana. It is so nice of you to help your cousin out!
