I've seen people using extra carpeting by cutting them into small squares large enough to fit on the leg of the furniture piece. Since you are using the same carpeting that you have installed it will match and won't standout. That way the mark will be in this small removable piece of carpeting instead of on your permanent carpeting so when you rearrange your furniture you won't have ugly marks.

Send/take them to the library. Tell them they know where the garden is, or the paper to write on (since you already said she loves writing), or the computer to research how engines work (since that's what he's interested in). Tell them to _decide for themselves_ what to do and then go do it. An 8 year old, gifted or not, should not need adult guidance all the time to decide what to do. Let alone a 12 year old. It's past time you lost the "we" when describing their free time activities. Several years past time in the case of the 12 year old.

My father-in-law (a dear sweet man) made furniture. At his job and at home. We have a dinning table, a sideboard, two dressers and a bookcase he made completely by hand. We lost him many years ago. By having these pieces of furniture he put so much love in building, we know he is still with us. We treasure each one them.
