How To Improve Study Skills

Rose Said:

How to improve my study skills?

We Answered:

How about joining a study group (though only meeting at a neutral place such as the library). Please also do the studying each day and don't wait until the day before an exam or quiz as learning over the longer term can help the information to remain stored in the brain. How about making up mock tests in the same format that the instructor administers such as 'short essay', 'fill-in-the-blanks', 'multiple choice', 'sentence completion', 'matching' or such. Perhaps you can also make index/flash cards out of the lined index cards. I used to prefer the larger index cards since they're easier when writing.

If you continue to have difficulty focusing, please talk with your family doctor. Please be well and take good care of yourself.

How can I improve my study skills and raise my math grade?

We Answered:

Hey, I'm with you on this one. I think the best way to handle math is to pay attention in class, and keep up with the material. Don't ever procrastinate, because math requires practice, and the same is true for science. (Chemistry and physics, especially). That's why just do your homework everyday, and efficiently. You'll know the material a lot better. And go in for help when you need it.
Bottom line is...PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! You'll find both science and math easier, as well as interesting.

Make a study guide. Put it into chapters based on what you need to know on the test, and then just simply re read it. If you really want to study hard on the test, than make a pre test based on the study guide, and then do the pre test and find out what you need to study, than study those things and re do the whole test including all the stuff that you got right. Once you got the test perfect, you'll get an awesome mark.

How do I improve my study skills?

We Answered:

1) Review the material BEFORE class. Even if you don't understand it, the lecture will make more sense.
2)Take good notes during the lectures, and while reading the material.
3)Review your notes right after the lecture or reading, and copy them over so they will be easy to understand later.
4)This really helped me--Find a study place, get some kind of timer, get comfortable, and don't think about ANYTHING except what you're studying for a period of time--no I need to go to the bathroom, no I need something to during, no I need to call someone during this time. Start with a short period and work up to a couple hours.

Make a place in your home that you will use to study. It should have good lighting and all your reference materials should be in easy reach. Remove distractions, such as television, etc.

Make sure in class that you use good listening techniques. Part of that involves having a good breakfast. Sit up straight in your chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor. You should be a little bit uncomfortable which is preferable to being too relaxed. Make sure you have all your tools with you, such as pen, paper, and items required for that particular class.

Take good notes. If the teacher repeats something more than once, it's because that particular bit of information is important and will likely appear in some form on a test. If they turn around and write something on the board, that is also important so take notes. Rewrite your notes when you get home so they are comprehensible and store them by date.

When studying from a textbook, take notes on salient points. Things like dates things occurred are important so write them down. Try some memory techniques, a famous example is "In 14 hundred and 92, Columbus sailed the ocean blue".

Is the coursework similar to high school? Only in the same manner that your last year of middle school was similar to your first year of high school. More will be expected of you. It is a progression.

Are all community colleges in California the same? No. Having different personnel and teaching staff guarantees they will be different as well as different ratings in the California system. All have the same admission requirements, after that, they differ in many ways.

This link will give you the variables and some interesting information about each CC in the California system. Just click on the name of the school you are interested in.

Can anyone share some techniques on how to improve study skills?

We Answered:

Yes. Concentrate more and more. Get some meditation skills to learn how to do that. The human brain learns through repetition. Write again and again the main points in every sentence and try to analyze better what you study. Get your own ideas and don't try to be accepted when you give an answer, show that you have your own mind.
And the most important one:
Never study to impress your parents. Study because you want to get a higher culture.

Discuss It!
