I Want To Study Abroad

Jeffrey Said:

I want a career at a college helping college students study abroad. What should I get a degree in?

We Answered:

That might be okay, or you could major in something like regional studies, geography, or a language. Just make sure you do some studying abroad yourself so that you can speak to the experience. And if you want to move up in that field and become head of a program, take some business courses - you could use accounting and business law. I was in charge of a study abroad department last year, and when we talked about the kind of people we wanted to hire, the thing which came out strongly was that we needed someone with integrity, budgeting capabilities, negotiating skills, organizational skills, cross-cultural fluency, and people skills (because you have to deal with students and their parents). We agreed that it was less important that the person be in love with travel themselves, as that sometimes would lead to ethical violations, if the person were to take free trips from vendors and spend their time traveling, rather than working with students.

Shelly Said:

I want to study abroad in England for a semester my junior year in high school. What are some good programs?

We Answered:

Well, to start, OB is wrong. England DOES allow high school exchanges, YFU does them (www.YFU.org).

However, I question why you would really want to go to England? In persuading your parents to allow an exchange, you're missing one of the biggest benefits -- language immersion! If you become fluent in another language, you can add $10,000 or more per year to your base salary! American companies are crying for those with linguistic abilities! Also, a cultural experience wouldn't be nearly as different from here as it would be to a country with a different language!

Some points to make to your parents: maturity, broadening horizons, language ability AND colleges and universities LOVE exchange students, to the point where many offer preferred admissions and/or scholarship money.

Yolanda Said:

Where is a great place I can go to study abroad if I want to study to become an author?

We Answered:

I highly suggest somewhere where you think you could find inspiration. For me, that means a lot of culture. Florence, Paris, etc... I am an aspiring travel writer and you can find inspiration in the most random places. Are you looking for a place where you want to party and experince night life? Or do you want a relaxed beach type setting? Maybe a little town in the country?
I will be studying abroad next Spring and am leaning toward Italy. Plus, being there, I am within hours of many major European cities by train!
Good luck and I wish you the best!
