Improve Study Skills

Jay Said:

what is 3-5 ways you can aplly knowledge about memory to improve study skills and performance?

We Answered:

Recall performance is positively correlated with the level of initial encoding or processing so you can improve performance by attempting to attach some "meaning" to the stimuli rather than to simply focus on the superficial details (e.g., focus on the meaning rather than how a word is pronounced). Learning capacity is enhanced by semantic clustering or grouping stimuli (e.g., group words from a wordlist that may fit a particuliar catagory). You can enhance retrieval by encoding a stimuli with an already stored memory trace or association (e.g., mnemonic aides). Retrieval is similarly enhanced by "encoding" a stimuli with multiple cues (e.g. visual imagery). Simple repetition can enhance the trace association improving retrieval and recall is also weakly but positively correlated with mood congruency (e.g., if you were happy when you memorized something than later recall performance will be at its best if your happy or sad and sad, anxious and anxious, etc.).

Good luck

Does anyone know of any good resources to improve ones study speed and accuracy? Study skills for A students?

We Answered:

Dear Allice,

You are right in thinking that even if you are already a good student, there is always room for improvement. Getting things done faster has many benefits.

One of them is that it will leave you with more time to research, work on projects, or actually have a little bit of a social life.

All students can learn how to take better notes, how to zero in on important points, and accomplish more by doing things in a smart and efficient way.

One of the best study skills sites for these things and more that I have found is the Joe Landsberger site. His link is at
http://www.studygs.net/. It is an awesome resource and contains many different study skills areas to learn about.

Also, it helps to find out what learning style you have. That way, you can focus on ways to help yourself improve and become faster in areas you are already good at. A good site to do this is at the Metamath site here: http://www.metamath.com/multiple/multipl…

There are some more links at the Nontraditional Student Study skills page that may also be helpful to you. That link is here:
http://www.nontradstudents.com/studyskil…

Good luck on your quest!

How can I improve my study skills in just 3 or 4 weeks?

We Answered:

Know your schedule and make out a schedule. If it helps, put it down in writing...what you will do - and when you will do it. Then, do it.
It is a proven fact that when a person does something the same for 18 days in a row, it becomes a habit. So, we can purposely and effectively form new habits whenever we want to.
Set aside time for things that are important to you. If its studying, set some good time aside for that task. Dont study when you are in need of something like sleep, food, sex etc... Study also, in a method that is successful for you. Some people have to re-write their notes in order for the information to get through to their braines. Some people have to repeat information over and over. Some people just have to read it and they remember it. Use whatever method that works for you. Everyone is different.
Successful studying will also depend on your committment to it. If everything else in the world is more important than that study, than you will not accomplish it.

Any tips on helping an 11 year old girl vastly improve her study skills? Can't seem to motivate her at all.

We Answered:

Use reward and punishment. punish her for not doing her work by taking away things that she likes and reward her for doing well by giving her things that she likes.

What can I do to improve my study skills?

We Answered:

For math, get all the available questions and try to solve them, solve 2-5 questions everyday and revise whatever you do in class that day and understand everything before you get out of class.

Social Sciences cultivate an act of reading and argue out points with your peers, make summaries which you can study as you are on your way home or in the park. Lecture to your self as if you are presenting a topic to the audience, go to the woods and do that, it will help your brain's thinking and retaining capacity. If you are able to do 2-5 math questions everyday then your brain's thinking capacity will develop.
