International Relations Studies

Lois Said:

What is the difference between International Relations and International Studies concerning college majors?

We Answered:

International Relations is a multidisciplinary major that draws from politics, history, economics, law, sociology, psychology, philosophy, ethics, and geography. You'll be dealing with foreign cultures, languages, worldviews, and values. The study of foreign languages is a necessity, as is a sense of empathy, compassion, and good will.

-

As an International Studies major your focus is more on depth than breadth, so while you’ll gain a greater appreciation for the commerce of the world as a whole, you will probably concentrate on a specific region of the globe, studying in detail its unique history, economy, and political structure. Whether it’s Africa, Asia, or Western or Eastern Europe, you will have the opportunity to focus on the region or countries that interest you most, learning their language, and perhaps even spending a semester studying abroad. In addition to focusing on a specific region, International Studies majors concentrate on some of the most pressing political and social issues of the contemporary world. You can choose to focus your area of study on economic development issues around the globe, or problems of diplomacy.

Drawing upon other fields of study, such as economics, history, and political science, International Studies will equip you with a greater understanding of how other cultures live and govern themselves.

--------

They're a like, but international relations is more on politics while international studies is more on culture. See princetonreview for more information on the major such as typical college classes.

Good luck!

Jimmy Said:

What is the difference between International Relations and International Studies major?

We Answered:

Woohoo! I was an IR major!
Anyway, I don't believe that one school will offer BOTH majors, so yes, for the most part you can assume they are similar. One big difference is that IR is a branch of Political Science and a recognized field, while International/Global Studies programs are going to be more of a hodge-podge of classes. At my school, IR was an interdisciplinary major with classes from the anthro, econ, soc, polisci and history departments (depending on your track- we had 4 'tracks' within the IR major) and IS, from what I've heard, has even more. IS at many schools is very much just about the cultural aspect, while again IR is a science.
So I guess all in all they ARE really similar, but an IR program would be more solid if you want to go into international work professionally afterward.
